List of Love Songs
Every genre of music has love songs. In fact, every genre of music has songs that deal with all stages of love. Here is a list of love songs from several different genres and eras of music, dealing with various stages of love. In no particular order:
Baby, I Love You - Aretha Franklin
The original diva herself might be best known for demanding r-e-s-p-e-c-t from her man, but this classic track shows Ms. Frankin's softer side. With the lyric, I'd deny myself before I'd see you without it, this song is all about blind devotion. It was a big hit for Franklin in the 60s. More recently, audiences may remember hearing it in the movie Goodfellas.

Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits
Is there a love story more tragic that Romeo and Juliet? Dire Straits gave the star-crossed lover story the rock'n'roll treatment on their 1980 album Making Movies. It was one of their biggest chart successes, but the live version of the song captured on their album Alchemy quickly became the standard version. In this bittersweet tale of love, fame tears apart Romeo and Juliet, and the song has been making hearts ache ever since.
I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need - Method Man and Mary J. Blige
You might not particularly associate hip hop with love songs, but this mid-90s classic couldn't fail with a Marvin Gaye sample and the softer side of Method Man. Mary handles the hook while Meth rattles off a surprisingly touching list of things he loves about his girl and makes a promise to be there through good times and bad. This is the kind of love song you can rock with even if you think love songs are too sappy for you. It gets the point across without losing the edge.
Austin - Blake Shelton
This is a track all about the one who got away. Blake Shelton nails the sensitive cowboy thing as he tells about his long wait for a phone call from a lost love, constantly updating his answering machine with a message for his missing lover, just in case the call comes. One day it does, and he hears, If you're calling about my heart, it's still yours. If you're regretting a breakup, this is your song.
Busby Berkley Dreams - The Magnetic Fields
The Magnetic Fields have made a solid career writing love songs for two decades now, so their catalog alone could satisfy all your love song needs. In the late 90s, they released a three CD compilation of love songs written in a wide range of musical genres, called 69 Love Songs. This track is from the box set. It talks about the difficulty of getting over lost love and getting caught up in daydreams of better days. The song is lead by a simple piano track and Stephin Merritt's unmistakable vocals.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
Fans of Rock of Love might be forgiven for thinking that Bret Michaels isn't what you'd call the romantic type. This song suggests otherwise. In fact, hair metal bands were masters of moving from macho, hard rocking tracks to incredibly heartfelt love songs. Of all of the hair band love ballads out there, this one stands in a league of its own.
