Hi Aldous - You're right, you can do that as long as you don't sell them. If you wanted to do a remix of a track and sell it, you would need permission and to purchase a mechanical license from the artist's publisher before you could do that. If you wanted to play your remix live, you would need a performance rights license, also from the original artist's publisher. As long as you're not making any money, you're ok, though.

One way producers, especially beat makers, get work is to approach up and coming artists/indie artists and offer to give them beats or production work, often for free. Getting your beat used on a track that get some promotion will help put you in a position where others hear your work and want to pay you to make beats for them. Check for local artists in your area that need beats and work out a deal to work together on some songs to build up a client list.

Well, there are several different ways you can go about getting heard. Playing live is your best bet - even in small local venues, playing live is the best way to build up an audience. I notice you have a UK email address - if you're in the UK, check in with your local arts council. They can set you up with an advisor who has experience in the music industry as well as advice on financial support for pursuing your music career.
