Both traditional radio and internet radio stations both pay performance rights (publishing. They pay a licensing fee to ASCAP,BMI,and SESAC to use the music from the artists they represent. The new law that was on the floor of both the House and Senate this year was to pay the actual performers who sing or rap the songs. The current Copyright law for performance rights, pays the contributors of the songs (producer, writer, composer, arranger).

Hi Remi -

The links in the article will take you to some companies that allow you to set up your own radio station. Each has their own set of rules, so best to check them each out and see which one suits you best.

We are complete novices but 2would like to set up a free fm internet radio station. we will need your advise. Please assist. Thanks

You're right, Patty. That is a problem. The reason that some of the online stations charge so much in the US is that online radio must pay performance rights royalties while "regular" radio stations do not (in the US). Getting a lot of listeners take a lot of promotion, but some online DJs have done it. One thing to consider is including ads in your show to offset the cost you have to pay.

I was quite disappointed that the listening audience for most of the free online radio stations are very low. Most of the stations want you to pay more than a brick-n-mortar radio station just to reach 500 or fewer people. The "Average Joe" does not have the equipment or the kind of connection that is able to reach the masses.

Hey Rick -

The instructions will depend on which site you use to start your station. Check out some of the sites suggested above, and they will walk you through the step up process for their own site.
