Hey Matthew - Gold/Platinum album status is awarded based on barcode scans - each barcode scan counts as a sale. Some music charts use a predetermined formula to define popularity that includes number of radio plays and pre-orders for unrelease tracks. That is why a song can be on a chart without being released.

Billboard Charts are based on sales, not purchases. Every wonder how a song goes gold before it is in a store to purchase. If you have the money, record a song, place big orders for it and you can be on the charts too. I am a DJ and I tried to order all the new chart hits. Alot of them were not yet released.
