The Musical

Hairspray began its rise to popularity with a 1988 movie from director John Waters. Set in the early 60s, the movie focuses on Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who dreams of dancing on a popular television music program. However, once she meets her goal, she leads a fight to integrate the show. After years as a cult classic, the movie was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002.
