McGraw has his father to thank for his foot in the door in the music industry; an ironic twist given the early nature of the relationship between the two. Tim grew up believing that his stepfather was his real father, until he discovered a birth certificate which listed minor league baseball player Tug McGraw as his dad.

Once Tim uncovered the family secret, his mother arranged for him to meet Tug, but Tug denied being Tim’s father. Tim tried to foster a relationship with Tug throughout his teenage years but Tug resisted. Finally, when Tim was 18 years old, Tug relented, acknowledging the strong resemblance between the two.

The elder McGraw helped Tim enter the music industry when he played Tim’s demo for a friend who had a friend who worked for country label Curb Records. The friend recommended Tim’s music to his friend at the label, and Curb took him on almost immediately. They released his debut album, Welcome to the Club, in 1993, but it failed to make much of a splash.

That all changed with McGraw’s sophomore release, Not a Moment Too Soon. The first single from the album, Indian Outlaw, generated a lot of controversy for its take on Native Americans, and DJs around the country refused to air it. Proving there is no such thing as bad publicity, the album shot up the charts. But it was the follow-up single, the heart string tugging Don’t Take The Girl, that really put McGraw on the map. The song became a number one hit, and his album became the number one country album of 1994.

From there, it was one success after another for McGraw. He is one of the top five award winners ever in country music, and his 2007 tour with his wife, country singer Faith Hill, broke the world record for biggest grossing music tour of all time.
