About The Strokes

The Strokes formed in 1998, but it was in 2000 that they began to rise to prominence, in the wake of the garage rock revival with other “The” bands, like The Hives and The White Stripes. Like many of these bands, the UK music press stood up and paid attention before the American press and audience, with the highly influential British Music Weekly the NME whipping itself into a veritable frenzy over The Strokes in particular. The band’s 2001 release, Is This It, was named the album of the year by the magazine.

Is This It did take off in the U.S. as well as around the world, and it was one of those rare releases that was lauded by both mainstream and indie press and won favor among mainstream, chart music fans and indie music fans.

The follow up release, 2003’s Room on Fire, did not do quite as well. The album sold respectably, achieving gold status, but both the press and the fans had backed off somewhat. Things picked up considerably again for The Strokes with their third album, First Impressions of Earth, particularly in the UK. The first single, Juicebox, rose to the top ten in the UK music charts, and the NME awarded them Best International Band in 2006. That album also went gold, and while The Strokes enjoy continued success, their main fan base remains in the UK and Japan.
