The Police Greatest Hits

From LoveToKnow Music

The Police greatest hits include both mainstream hits and indie rock favorites. This is one band who managed to be successful at moving from the underground to mainstream and retain fans in both worlds. Bad feelings between the band members almost put an end to this band for good, but fans finally got the chance to hear The Police greatest hits again when the band reformed in 2007.

The Police: Early Years

The Police grew out of London’s late 1970s punk scene. Stewart Copeland, drummer for The Police and the band’s founder, had previously been in prog rock band Curved Air, but he was fascinated by the scene that was growing up around the punk scene and wanted to be a part of it. He recruited singer and bass player Sting (real name Gordon Michael Thomas Sumner) and guitar player Henry Padovani into the group in 1977 and began playing shows around London.

During the same time, the three began rehearsing with a fellow London band called Strontium 90, with the idea of that band being a separate project. Strontium 90 had plans to play as a band for a Gong reunion show and then called it quits, but the three existing members of The Police recruited Strontium 90 member Andy Summers to their band. It was during this period that a lot of demos were recorded that went on to become hits for The Police, including Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

Soon after the band started playing, it became clear that Henry Padovani did not have the musical ability to keep up with where the band wanted to go. By late 1977, Padovani had left the band, and Summers took over as the band’s sole guitar player. The line-up of Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers would be the final line-up for the band.

It was also during this time in the late 1970s that the band developed their signature look. All three members of The Police had blonde hair, but they weren’t born that way. They had the chance to do a commercial for Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum and they dyed their hair blonde for the commercial. They decided to keep the look and make it one of the promotional angles for their band.

Synchronicity and The End of an Era

Although The Police developed an underground following almost immediately in their career, it was their album Synchronicity that really put them over the top. Moving on a little from the punk scene and incorporating the sounds from burgeoning post punk and new wave, Synchronicity was the right record at the right time. It not only broke sales records – to date, the record has sold over 8 million copies in the US alone - but it also made The Police one of the biggest names in music in the early 80s. New music channel MTV also helped to establish the popularity of the band by putting their videos into heavy rotation.

The instant stardom status took a toll on the band, particularly because one star shone a little bit brighter than the rest. Sting was getting the majority of the attention and was actively developing a solo career. The other members of the band, particularly Stewart Copeland, were not happy with the focus on Sting and felt he wasn’t as committed to the band as he should be.

Although there was never officially a break-up, The Police ceased playing together in 1984. Sting embarked on a highly successful solo career, but band blood remained between the band members.

Reunion

It took all the way until 2007 for The Police to see past their difference. The band reunited then for an extensive reunion tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of their biggest hits - Roxanne.
