About Taylor Swift

At the young age of 18 in 2008, Taylor Swift seems to already be on top of her game – a fact that surprises some people, given her youth. What might be even more surprising is that Swift set herself up on this road since her toddler years. She came from a musical family – her grandmother was an opera singer – but from around the age of 3, Swift took a shine to country music and counted Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline among her favorite singers while her friends were still watching Barney. She also made the round of local fairs, carnivals, ball games and other outlets for local talent.

By the age of 11, Swift had taken it upon herself to record a demo tape of herself singing along to her favorite songs, and convinced her parents to take her to Nashville’s famous Music Row to hand out the tape to record labels. Incredibly, she managed to score a record deal from this tape, but even more incredibly, she left the deal when she was 13 after deciding it wasn’t the right environment for her.

Around the time Swift was 12, her parents moved from Tennessee back to their Pennsylvania home, but continued to make trips to Nashville with their daughter. During these trips, a 12 year old Swift began writing songs with local songwriters at Nashville’s lauded Bluebird Café. She also began to perform at the Bluebird, and it was during one of these performances that she got her break. The owner of independent country label Big Machine Records caught one of her sets and signed her to a deal.

Swift’s debut album, Taylor Swift, was released in October 2006. Propelled by the single Tim McGraw (written to help her ex-boyfriend remember her), the album went all the way to number 5 on the mainstream Billboard Charts and reached number 1 on the Billboard country charts. Swift wrote all of the songs on the album. Tours with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and Rascal Flatts followed, helping Swift to reach even wider audiences.

Myspace has also been integral to Swift’s success. She is the number one country artist on the site, and the number 15 artist over all. Her songs have been listened to millions of times.
