Stevie Wonder I Just Called to Say I Love You
From LoveToKnow Music
Stevie Wonder I Just Called to Say I Love You is not a favorite of Stevie Wonder purists, but it is one of the most recognizable songs of the 1980s. Although the song is something of a departure from the usual Stevie Wonder hits, it may just be his best known track.
Stevie Wonder I Just Called to Say I Love You – The Basics
I Just Called to Say I Love You is a song from the 1984 Stevie Wonder album Woman in Red. It was released as a single in October 1984, and went to the top of the Billboard Charts for three weeks, when it was eventually dethroned by Billy Ocean’s Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run). The song topped the charts in a total of 16 countries and went top ten in two more. He also won a Grammy for the track.
Thematically, the song discusses a simple phone call without a purpose other than to express love. Stevie Wonder wrote, performed and co-produced the track with Lionel Richie. Lee Garrett, who was Wonder’s songwriting partner in the 1970s, claims to have written the song, in an ongoing dispute over publishing rights.
The song was a hard one to take for fans of Wonder’s music from the 1970s, which was significantly more experimental. I Just Called to Say I Love You is a very simple, straight forward track that was backed by quintessential 80s synths. He drew a lot of criticism from fans and critics who were fans of his older music.
