About Star Wars

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…” – or 1970s Hollywood, to be exact, film director George Lucas conceived the first film in what would become one of the most prolific and longest lasting movie brands in history – Star Wars. The first Star Wars film, which was originally titled Star Wars but has since been named Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, debuted in theaters in May 1977, and was an instant hit.

The film might have been an instant hit, but it almost did not make it to the screen. In the early 1970s, Lucas signed a three movie deal with Universal Movie Studios to make the film American Graffiti and two Star Wars movies. American Graffiti came off without a hitch, but the first version of the Star Wars script was rejected. The studio found the story, which was based on the book The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa, to be overly complicated and felt that audiences wouldn’t understand or take to the film. Lucas was extremely frustrated and publicly aired his grievances, but eventually he re-adapted his story into something the studio was comfortable with. He also expanded his character and theme line-up and introduced what would become some of the most recognizable facets of the series, including Anakin Skywalker, the Sith, and the Death Star.

Although Lucas had a deal in place to do a sequel to Star Wars, neither him nor the studio were sure how audiences were going to react to the film. For Lucas, the most important thing was to get this story he was creating out, and so he turned to writer Alan Dean Foster with the idea of turning his ideas into novels instead of scripts. He would then adapt the novels into scripts if there was a demand.

He needn’t have worried. Star Wars was a major hit, and did so well that Lucas decided he wanted to do an extensive network of films to tell the whole story. After making three films, Lucas had grown tired of the series and didn’t want to go on with any of his other ideas. However, eventually he was convinced that audiences wanted more of the story, and so he began making films again.

The films in the Star Wars series to date are:

  • Star Wars IV: A New Hope
  • Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back
  • Star Wars VI: Return the Jedi
  • Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace
  • Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the Clones
  • Star Wars Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith
  • Star Wars: Clone Wars
