Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack

From LoveToKnow Music

The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack is almost as popular as the movie that swept the Academy Awards. Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire, has a reputation for completing his films with top notch soundtracks, and this movie is no exception. The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack has won several awards and went to number one on the US Billboard charts.

About The Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack

The score for Slumdog Millionaire was created by famed conductor A.R. Rahman. Rahman had a tough task ahead of him in creating the music for the film. Director Danny Boyle wanted music that captured the same tension and contrast between old India and new India that is demonstrated in the film, but Boyle didn’t specifically want Indian music – he wanted songs that were global in their impact and that could be popular anywhere. Boyle was also working on a tight budget and an even tighter schedule. Rahman delivered for Boyle on all fronts. He composed the music for Slumdog Millionaire in a mere 2 months and recorded the music in a staggering 2 weeks. This turnaround time is vastly shorter than most other soundtrack projects.

The other driving force behind the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was artist M.I.A. Danny Boyle was enamored with M.I.A.’s song Paper Planes before the film had even begun to shoot, and he knew he wanted to find a place for it in the movie. M.I.A. not only agreed to allow her song to appear in the film, but she also contributed to some of the other tracks and released the soundtrack on her record label, NEET Records.

The soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire was not an instant hit. It was released on November 25, 2008, and although it did reasonably well, the popularity of the album slowly increased, similar to the slow burn of the film. As the movie began to get more attention and was nominated for more and more awards, the soundtrack began to sell more and more copies. In January of 2009, it finally rose to the top of the Billboard Electronica charts. After Slumdog Millionaire won a collection of Academy Awards, sales of the album increased 38 percent.

In addition to being associated with an award winning film, the soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire has brought in awards in its own right, including:

  • 2009 Golden Globe – Best Original Score
  • 2009 BAFTA – Best Film Music
