Sheryl Crow Songs

From LoveToKnow Music

Sheryl Crow songs are known by just about every music fan around the world. Crow was not an overnight sensation, but she has worked long and hard to build up a career that has now made her one of music’s most recognizable acts.

Sheryl Crow – Early Years

Missouri native Sheryl Crow had music in her life from an early age, thanks to her parents, who were both musicians. In her high school years, she was heavily involved in school activities, from the Future Farmers of America to the National Honor Society, but interestingly, music was not her main focus during this time. That all changed when she went to college at the University of Missouri. She majored in Music Composition, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, and she played in a local band called Cashmere.

After college, Crow settled into life as a music teacher. The first step in her music career came when a mutual friend introduced her to producer Jay Oliver. Oliver was doing many commercial production jobs and hired Crow to a lot of voicing work for him. She did vocals on everything from a commercial for a local department store to national campaigns for McDonalds and Toyota.

From Backing Singer to Front Woman

The vocal work Crow did on the commercials was incredibly effective for her career. She landed a job as a backup singer for Michael Jackson his BAD tour and was his sole co-singer on the song I Just Can’t Stop Loving You. After that, she had a failed turn in the oft mocked, short lived TV series Cop Rock.

During this same time, Crow scored a record deal and began work on a self titled debut album in 1992. The label eventually rejected the album, however, and it was never released. Since then, copies of it have leaked on the internet.

After her album was turned down, Crow began playing with a new band, called the Tuesday Night Music Club, and she also began to establish herself as a songwriter. Celine Dion and Wynonna Judd covered her songs during this period.

While working with the Tuesday Night Music Club, Crows album received a release, and she named it after the group. The problems with the Tuesday Night Music Club started just after this, though. Before Crow’s arrival, the band was essentially a loose collective of people collaborating together, and the increasing tension Crow was receiving turned it into her “backing band.” Also, there were disputes with members over who really wrote the songs on the album. Tensions aside, Tuesday Night Music Club became a smash hit for Crow and earned her three Grammy Awards.

After the Tuesday Night Music Club, Crow’s career was on the fast track to the top. These days, she is as well known for her activities outside of music as she is for her recording work. She collaborated with Laurie David on an anti global warming campaign and has been active in fundraisers for scleroderma and cancer. Crow herself battled breast cancer in 2007. She has also worked with a host of musicians, both for her own material and as a guest vocalist on other musicians’ albums.
