September 2006 Daily Free Song Downloads

  • Last Nite by The Strokes - An older one, but a good one for a holiday weekend. Even if you think The Strokes are (or should I say, were) highly overrated, it's hard to not tap your feet to this catchy, retro-rock, Iggy Pop/Velvet Underground dance party. Follow this link, and you can also check out samples from bands like Bloc Party and The Arcade Fire.
  • The Alamo is No Place for Dancing by The Scene Aestheic. Acoustic indie folk pop on the darkish side, not unlike Red House Painters or maybe even The Silver Jews. Give it a chance - you won't be disappointed.
  • Crazy by Gnarls Barkley - The mysterious Gnarls Barkley brings you soul for the 21st century, with nods to, well, just about every other genre your little heart desires along the way.
  • Jetstream by New Order - From the tragic ashes of Joy Division rose New Order, oh so many years ago. But just because they've been at it for a long time doesn't mean they've lost it, as evidenced here, in this lovely electro-pop gem from their new album. It might be ever so slightly more mature, but it's still as good as any Blue Monday or Bizarre Love Triangle listening experience.
  • This Old Road by Kris Kristofferson. Follow this link, and you will be rewarded with not one, but eleven tunes by this gritty voiced, legendary star of outlaw country and silver screen. These songs are from his Don Was produced first studio album in ten years. Like Waylon and Willie? This is for you.
  • Banquet by Bloc Party - Post-punk music actually worthy of the title. Like Interpol, New Order, or The Cure? OK, then, what are you waiting for?
  • Badd by the Ying Yang Twins - Crunk masters The Ying Yang Twins shot to fame with The Whisper Song, and anyone who has been watching VH1 lately knows they just did a turn helping Flavor Flav find love. This link will take you to two free songs. Note - these songs are explicit.
  • Another Sunny Day by Belle and Sebastian. They wrote the book on twee indie pop. This track is from their latest album.
  • Love Me or Hate Me by Lady Sovereign. Lady Sovereign looks like an unlikely hip-hop star, but don't be fooled. This little, little girl from London rocks it in a big, big way - big enough to get the attention of Jay-Z, who signed her to a record deal. This effortlessly cool hip-hop is some of the most unique, exciting stuff out there right now. How could we ever hate her?
  • Dead on Arrival by Fall Out Boy. Can you be punk AND appear on several epsiodes of One Tree Hill? "Yes," say Fall Out Boy, but don't take their word for it. Check out this free track, and you be the judge.
  • Time and Time Again by Bad Livers. There are those who play at being old time bluegrass bands, and then there is the Bad Livers. This is bluegrass like it used to be done, so authentic you'd think these boys invented it. This link will take you to two free tracks, and even if you think you don't like bluegrass, you should check it out. So bluegrass it's almost punk.
  • Going Nowhere by Cut Copy. Dance music for kids who thought they were too cool to dance. This is synth pop, disco, and punk, all rolled up into one, and if you think that sounds like a bad idea, well, think again. It works. Well, go on then, what are you waiting for?
  • Like The 309 by Johnny Cash. This is the last song Johnny Cash every wrote, and if you follow this link, you will be rewarded with three other songs from Johhny's last studio album. This is country for people who think they hate country. They just don't make them like Johnny anymore.
  • Flip It by Rampage, featuring Sean Paul. No longer content to ride the coattails of his friend Busta Rhymes, Rampage grabbed Sean Paul and The Neptunes and came up with this infectious little ditty. No wonder it is one of the most popular downloads around right now. Just a warning, though this song is explicit.
  • Kelly by Van She. Van She are an Australian indie outfit keeping all the good things about the 80s alive. If you loved The Cure or if you loved Journey, there is something here for you - and yes, I did just use The Cure and Journey in the same sentence.
  • Stalk You by Los Abandoned. This is riot grrrl rock for a new generation. Punky, poppy, and fun, these California girls will sometimes remind your of The Breeders and sometimes remind you of Bikini Kill. Did I mention this link will take you to a total of FOUR free songs? Well, it will.
  • Le Disko by Shiny Toy Guns. Shiny Toys Guns play the kind of music that you know is technically electronica, but yet has all the sweat, swagger, and sex appeal of punk rock. To find out more about Shiny Toy Guns, read our interview with the band.
