The Male Crew
There are a good selection of songs for any Hip-Hop and R&B fan, with some songs running as ballads and others running a little harder. Most of the songs by the male artists get a little poetic, like the first track, Ballad of Fire Starr. It’s 2-Pac in lyrics with a little independent style in the beat and orchestration. The club anthem on the album is Ice Cube’s You Can Do It. This song is played during the dance club scene where Julia Styles’ character gets forced into dancing on the floor. Crazy and My Window get the ballad quota out of the way, though the Soulbone song isn’t really that strong compared to the others. Only You by 112 and Notorious Big is a nice ballad that rounds out the harder songs and the female singers.
The Female Crew
There are some ladies lending their voices to the Save the Last Dance soundtrack. Lucy Pearl joins Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg in a nice relationship song. Pink throws some anger with You Make Me Sick, but in some strange way, it's a sweet song. On the song You Can Do It, Ms. Toi raps/sings some of the chorus and a few lines in the versus. The song is very sexual in nature and fits the scene (see above) well. Ms. Toi's voice is raspy, but enunciated enough to be rather attractive. Of all the songs on the album, Athena Cage's voice sings heavenly on All or Nothing. It's a good ending song for the soundtrack that is full of rich beats and stylistic orchestration.
The Sequel
There was a movie sequel spawned in 2006 that also coincided with another soundtrack. This newer album contains current artists like T-Pain, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, and Ruben Studdard. It's still mainly a Hip-Hop and R&B-based soundtrack, but like the first soundtrack, has ballads and slower songs that balance out the album.
