Robert Plant

From LoveToKnow Music

With a voice that has graced the radio since the 1960s and that is instantly recognizable to music fans, Robert Plant has had a major impact on modern music. Plant is known for blending blues, rock and folk music and has consistently reinvented himself over the course of his long music career.

Robert Plant: The Early Years

Born Robert Anthony Plant on August 20, 1948, in West Bromwich, UK, Plant spent most of his childhood in Worcestershire. Music was an interest at a young age, and he has spoken of hiding in the curtain in his home to do renditions of Elvis tracks. Blues music became an early interest as well for him, perhaps because of the growing interest in blues music in general among bands in the UK during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Artists like Robert Johnson and Jerry Miller became favorites of Plant’s during this time, and the blues influence has remained present in his music ever since.

Plant originally had plans to become an accountant and went as far as spending two weeks in an accountancy training course. He eventually decided that the pull of music was too strong. He threw himself into the English Midlands famed blues scene at the time and moved from band to band, providing vocals. It was during this time he met future Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

Day jobs were a necessity during this time. Plant supported himself with a stint at Woolworths and laying pavement for Wimpey’s construction. CBS Records took note of his distinctive voice and got him into the studio to record three songs, but that deal fizzled out before it had even begun.

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin’s power team of Plant and Jimmy Page came together during a talent show at a college. Page was looking for a new singer to join The Yardbirds and had his sites on a man named Terry Reid. Reid declined, but recommended that Page attend the college talent show to check out a singer named Robert Plant. Page offered Plant the job on the spot after hearing him sing and realizing that the two had a shared interest in blues music. Page had toured the U.S., which impressed Plant, so he accepted the job.

The band was originally called The New Yardbirds, but after adding John Bonham and Jon Paul Jones to the mix, the band was renamed Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin’s debut, self titled album was released in 1968 and helped usher in a new era of music. To the dismay of the band, who loved and recorded a great deal of acoustic music, this album is often considered the first heavy metal album.

Led Zeppelin became one of the most successful acts in music during the 1970s and Plant himself became a mega star. He also garnered a reputation for partying hard on tours and indulging in plenty of groupies and drugs. Led Zeppelin retain the reputation for being the hardest partying band in music and their tour stories are music business lore.

Life After Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham. Plant began establishing a solo career in 1982, with the release of the album Pictures at 11. Although his solo albums didn’t burn up the charts like a Zeppelin album, he consistently sold out arenas while touring solo, mostly with Zeppelin fans hoping (futilely, at this point), to hear some old Zep songs.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Plant and Page sporadically reunited for various projects, with varying degrees of success. They began to perform Led Zeppelin songs when they played live. On three occasions, the surviving members of Zeppelin, with John Bonham’s son Jason taking his place on drums, have performed together as Led Zeppelin.

Plant’s most successful venture post Led Zeppelin has been his collaboration with Allison Krauss in the late 2000s. They play primarily America roots influenced music and worked together on the Grammy winning album Raising Sand.

Although Led Zeppelin have reunited a few times, Plant is the one holdout on an extended Led Zeppelin tour. The other members are keen to make it happen, but Plant so far refuses to be a part of the plans.
