About The Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in 1983 in Los Angeles. The four core members of the band have remained the same over the years – Anthony Kiedis, Flea (real name Michael Balzary) and John Frusciante. The band initially had two other members – Hillel Slovak and John Irons – but Slovak fell victim to a heroin overdose in 1988, and Irons left the band in the fallout after the death. After a few attempts at finding a new drummer to replace Irons, eventually Chad Smith was invited to join The Red Hot Chili Peppers later in 1988 and has remained with the band ever since. Frusicante briefly quit the band as they rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, unwilling to deal with the pressures of fame. He eventually returned in 1999 and still plays with the band.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers sound has changed many times over the years, and the band loves to dabble in different styles and genres. Their biggest hits in the late 1980s had a grungy sound with touches of the punk styles that had influenced the band from the beginning. Since then, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have experimented with funk, metal and psychedelic rock. In later years, they have become considerably more mainstream and are now staples both on Top 40 radio stations and adult contemporary radio stations.
