The Pussycat Dolls is a much more complex organization than many people realize. Fans of the music know the core vocal group, made up of Nicole Sherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Kimberly Wyatt, Ashley Roberts, Melody Thorton and Jessica Sutta, but these women are just a handful of the surprisingly large group that can call themselves a Pussycat Doll. Other members of the group include the large number of girls that perform in the Pussycat Dolls Lounge – the group’s famous Las Vegas show. Usually, the members of the vocal group do not appear in the Pussycat Dolls Lounge show, and likewise, the Lounge dancers don’t usually appear with the vocal group.

How did a pop group become such a large corporation? Well, the answer is that the Pussycat Dolls were never intended to be a pop group in the first place. The original group was formed in 1995 by Robin Antin and Christina Applegate as a burlesque group. They gathered together a group of girls, including Carmen Electra, and began performing weekly burlesque shows in Los Angeles’ Viper Room Club. They stayed in residency there until 2001, at which point the show was moved to another LA club, The Roxy.

As a burlesque group, the Pussycat Dolls received a great deal of media attention. Many of the girls appeared in Playboy magazine, and there were also spreads in Maxim and other men’s magazines around the world. Eventually, Interscope Records noticed the group and floated the idea of adding a pop music component to the act. A new group of girls was put together to be the vocal group, and the singing act The Pussycat Dolls that music fans know was born.

As of 2008, the music side of the group had released two albums: PCD and Doll Domination.

The Pussycat Dolls, like most pop groups, do not write their own lyrics. Interscope, their record label, hires songwriters to write songs specifically for them and also buys songs that were not necessarily written with the group in mind for them to record. R.City is just one example of songwriters who have written material for the group – they are behind the Pussycat Doll’s 2008 hit When I Grow Up.
