Why Promote Your Music on Myspace?

It is hard to find a young adult that doesn’t have a Myspace profile these days. It means something different to everyone. For some, the site is merely a place to find other like-minded souls, for others it is a free dating service. However, online businesses and musicians are quickly discovering its commercial implications. With 75 million users and climbing, one Myspace profile can reach a lot of people- all over the world, in fact.

Take a certain Ms. Tila Tequila, for example. Haven’t heard of her yet? You will. That’s not to say she is someone deserving of great attention. She is one of many scantily clad women on the Internet, trying to carve a niche out for herself (albeit, a superficial niche). However, she has become so popular on Myspace.com (over 1 million friends and growing), she is now a celebrity in her own right. Once just a regular girl on the social networking train, she is now a Stuff cover girl with a record deal and forthcoming movie contracts. It is both an inspiring and head-scratching success story.

How To Promote Your Music on Myspace

Starting a music profile is very simple and free. In the Music section of the site, there is an option in the top, right-hand corner that says “Artist Signup”. If you have an email account, you can create a personalized page, complete with your own songs for play and download. It is wise to categorize yourself in a genre that will reach the most people, but make sure it is the type of people that will be interested in your sound.

Creating a personalized page requires HTML codes for layouts, pictures and anything else you’d like to add that isn’t already on the template. A simple Google search will bring many results for different layouts. Also, free photo-hosting sites like Photobucket will provide HTML codes for any pictures you would like to feature on the site. Some bands even post videos of their performances, which are also easily uploaded.

Getting the word out about your band starts small, but can grow very quickly. That is due to the viral structure of Myspace. Each person can request the next person to be his or her “friend”. As a Myspace friend, you will be able to comment on other people’s page and post bulletins and upcoming events. Musicians find event bulletins to be a great way to easily promote gigs and album releases. If someone is already on a musician’s friend list, then they are already a targeted customer. Friends beget friends, and so on and so on…. just ask Tila Tequila.

Thanks, but it's harder to promote your music on Myspace than that. I can't get hardly anyone to add me, no matter how many bulletins or comments I make.
