Post-rock
From LoveToKnow Music
Post-rock is an experimental genre of music which began in the early to mid 90s and is presently flourishing in popularity.
Sound
Post-rock is generally guitar-centred and instrumental, avoiding the use of common riffs and song structures in favour of atmospheric and cyclical movements. Jazz, Ambient, Classical, and Electronica are all audible in post-rock in one place or another. Post-rock is purely experimental by nature and generally attempts to explore the possibilities of rock-band setups to create more immersive audible textures. It is sometimes hypnotic or droning in sound.
History and prominent bands
It is generally considered that Tortoise were the first post-rock band, with their early albums being widely considered the definitive example of this genre. Starting as an underground movement, many bands took their own spin on post-rock:
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor used long, slow build-ups and unusual instruments to create a sense of power.
- Explosions In The Sky took the sound of Tortoise and made it more accessible
- Sigur Ros added classical strings and unique vocals, giving them a very original edge on other Post-rock bands
- Mogwai explored the use of guitar-based melodies and down-tempo, melancholic songs.
Post-hardcore
Amongst other variations, many hardcore or metal bands have combined post-rock style abstraction into their music, spawning what is commonly known as post-hardcore or post-core. Groundbreaking modern metal bands such as Isis, Sunn O))), and Jesu are considered examples of post-hardcore bands.
