Both independent and mainstream artists alike put a profile on Myspace so they can showcase their look and sound. Featured artists and music videos are given special notice on the homepage. When one visits the music section of the site, you can find a list the top artists’ profiles. At a profile, a visitor can see, hear, and communicate with the artist. Myspace boasts three separate lists of “top artists” here. One list is for unsigned artists, one is for independent artists, and the other is for mainstream artists. The profiles are ranked each day according to the number of page views. The current most popular genres include pop, dance, rap, and punk. The equality given to unsigned and independent artists gives Myspace an edge, marketing wise. It truly functions as an equal opportunity, democratic system. In a world where teenagers and young adults are primarily seen as consumers, Myspace allows them to decide what they want to see. It is not unlike a wiki-site, in that it is free for anyone to contribute.

Become A Featured Artist

Anyone is free to become a Myspace music artist. Once a profile is built, one has the opportunity to relist it as a ‘band profile”. Uploading songs and videos is fairly easy and word of mouth travels very quickly on the site. This type of networking is often referred to as being “viral”, in that there is such a short degree of separation between everyone. Once a song or video is posted onto a band’s site, every other member is free to post the same songs on their profiles. To become a featured artist on the homepage, one must e-mail Myspace with a request. Filmmakers have also caught onto Myspace’s viral network of consumers and fans.

Myspace Records

Not unlike other major sites like Napster, Myspace has a lot of influence over young listeners. Although Myspace has only been around since 2003, it is already sponsoring major concerts and most recently, has released an album. Entitled Myspace Records Volume One, the album features some of the most popular bands on the site. Each of the featured artists have received hundreds of thousands of page views on their respective profiles. The Myspace album is a gift to fans and is only available to members. There is a new guy who has only been on myspace for about 3 months now and has already got over 87,000 plays. one of his songs called amelias song made me cry. Hes great.
