October

  • Lonely Last Summer by The Carolines. "Summer" is the operative word in that song title, as The Carolines make light and breezy, sommer friendly power pop. This is for fans of Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, The Beach Boys, Beachwood Sparks, and The Pernice Brothers.
  • Perfect World (Life During Wartime Mix) by Dr. Octagon. Those who heard Dr. Octagon's album "Blue Flowers" in the late 1990s surely never forgot it. The lyrics were weird, and sometimes they were downright disturbing, but the beats phenomenal (so phenomenal, in fact, that a lyric-free version of the album was released for the faint of heart). With this track, Dr. Octagon, also known as Kool Keith, proves he is still the most inventive, revolutionary hip hop artist out there.
  • I'm Your Man by Nick Cave. Ok, that's not the whole truth. I'm Your Man is really a Leonard Cohen song, covered here by Nick Cave. This version comes from the soundtrack of the upcoming documentary of the same name. The film chronicles the Came So Far For Beauty Leonard Cohen tribute concert that happened earlier this year in Sydney, which also featured performances by Rufus Wainwright, Jarvis Cocker, and the McGarrigles, to name but a few.
  • Call on Me by Janet Jackson featuring Nelly. Don't worry, no wardrobe malfunction jokes here. Miss Janet returns with this first single off her new album and shows us all how her sound is remarkably up to date. The hip hop influence of producer (and boyfriend) Jermaine Dupri is evident, here, helping Janet stay as relevant as ever. Watch the video here.
  • Get Myself Into It by The Rapture. Even hip indie kids find it socially acceptable to dance to The Rapture's music. They take the sounds of bands like Joy Division and Gang of Four and re-wrap them in a nice little electronica package for your listening pleasure, whether you plan to spend today searching for used, out of print Cherry Red Records CDs, or if you plan to spend tonight getting your dance on. Isn't it nice to find something everyone can agree on?
  • Georgia Hard by Robbie Fulks. Poor Robbie Fulks. Just because he was first discovered by an indie label (Bloodshot), he is forever labeled "alt country." Call his music that if you must, but really, he simply makes country music the way country music used to be made - before it went all "pop." His voice was made for country crooning, and his often tongue in cheek lyrics mean he can make you laugh, even while he's making you cry into your beer. Give the man his due. You don't have to wear a cowboy hat to be country.
  • Incinerate by Sonic Youth. Art rock. Punk rock. No wave. These are all things they say about Sonic Youth. Really, all you need to know is that they are GOOD. Some 20+ years down the line, they are as new and inventive as ever. Take notes, kids - this is how it is supposed to be done.
  • Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake (featuring Timbaland). JT and Timbaland come together again to make pop music edgy enough that even grown ups can like it. He's come a long way since his *NSYNC days.
  • I Just Came To Tell You That I'm Going by Jarvis Cocker and Kid Loco. OK, you caught me again. This song isn't really "by" Jarvis Cocker and Kid Loco, but rather is a cover a Serge Gainsbourg tune, featured on the new Serge Gainsbourg tribute album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. Though it's hard to conceive of a better contender to Gainsbourg's crown than the inimitable Jarvis Cocker, artists as diverse as Franz Ferdinand, Tricky, Michael Stipe, and Sly and Robbie give it a go on this album as well. Follow this link, and you'll get to check out all of their efforts.
  • Everything I Once Had by The Honorary Title. You might have heard these Brooklyn based emo/indie kids on an episode of One Tree Hill last season or seen them in concert with Taking Back Sunday. They have been compared to Arab Strap, but, well, I don't hear a hint of the Strap here. Fans of Taking Back Sunday and Panic! At the Disco...you'll like this one.
  • Sugar by Ladytron. For years now, Ladytron has been the electronica outfit of choice for other electronica musicians, but maybe not so much with your average music buyer. Now that they have a brand new album coming out, don't you think it's time you got in on the act? By the way, if you ever get a chance to see this Liverpool based group live, don't pass it up.
  • Four/four by d'Astro. This one is for fans of Sonic Youth, The Fall, and Wire, with a dash of new wave thrown in for good measure. These Leeds, UK, kids have shared the stage with the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Deerhof and wowed the audiences all around. Now, it's your turn.
  • I Need Some Fine Wine, and You, You Need to be Nicer To Me by The Cardigans. Remember The Cardigans? Picture it, the mid-1990s, you turn on the radio (any station), and you hear a coy female voice pleading, "love me, love me...say that you love me." Well, The Cardigans are back with a new album of lovely little pop gems, and they get bonus points for good song titles, like the one you see hear. It's not their fault that "love me, love me" song is stuck on your head again now; go on and give this new one a try.
  • She Told Me So by George Strait. When we came across this track, it was described as "neo-traditionalist country." Eh? I think that's a fancy way of saying that this is country music the way George Jones might have done it, and not simply pop music by someone who happens to be wearing a cowboy hat. Enjoy this neo-traditionalist country tune, and who knows, if you follow this link, you might just find an entire album worth of material to download...
  • Don't Feel Like Dancin by Scissor Sisters. The Scissor Sister might not feel like dancin' (after all, they took your mama out all night, they must be a bit sleepy), but I bet YOU'LL feel like dancing after hearing this track from their new album Ta-Dah.
  • About Us by Brooke Hogan, featuring Paul Wall. Yes, THAT Brooke Hogan, daughter of Hulk. Her album Undiscovered is released October 24. You can read our interview with her here.
  • Charlotte Sometimes by The Cure. Now, this is exciting. Rhino, reigning kings and queens of killer box sets, bring you this song from their compilation A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box. This 3 disc box set features music from bands who were goth before every kid at your local high school was, like Joy Division, Bauhaus, The March Violets, Nick Cave, and so on and so on. Follow this link, and not only will you get to download this Cure song, but also 11 other superb tracks from the collection.
  • Steady, As She Goes by The Raconteurs. This is Jack White's band that's not The White Stripes - more straight up 70s blues rock that The White Stripes, and this time, there's bass. Follow this link, and you will get to down the whole Raconteurs album Broken Boy Soilder.
  • Drilled a Wire Through My Cheek by Blue October. In honor of this most scary day of all, Halloween, we bring you this song from the soundtrack to Saw III.
