Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack

From LoveToKnow Music

The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is the musical accompaniment to Tim Burton’s 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas. The stop-motion claymation movie was the first of it’s kind to be on a feature scale. The movie didn’t really hit a chord with fans until a year after it was released on VHS. Then, like most of Tim Burton’s movies, Nightmare Before Christmas achieved a cult status and has continued garnering more fans each year. Danny Elfman composed the score, with orchestration help from Mark McKenzie, and wrote the lyrics to all the songs and actually performed in most of them.

A Good Mix of Styles

Many consider the music for The Nightmare Before Christmas Danny Elfman’s best work. He compliments the dark, moody atmosphere of the movie with dark and moody music, though not all the music is gloomy and depressing. In The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, “Oogie Boogie’s Song” is funky and “Town Meeting Song” is light and entertaining. When listening to the songs, it should be easy for you to admit they are catchy. The dramatic songs “Poor Jack” and “Sally’s Song” aren’t meant for peppy karaoke parties, but you can pump out the fun ones anyway and raise your cult movie cred with your friends.

One of the most interesting tracks isn't a song, but the opening with the monologue spoken by Patrick Stewart. Captain Picard's deep, sharp voice lends well to the atmosphere by hitting you with the mood of the album that is following.

Disney’s 2007 Choice

Disney decided in early 2007 to re-release The Nightmare Before Christmas in theatres on October 20 in a fancy 3-D format. Will modern audiences fall in love again with a 14-year-old movie in a new skin? Maybe with a modern rendition of the soundtrack. With a different release of the movie, Disney also decided to change up The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. Fallout Boy, Fiona Apple, Marilyn Manson, Panic! At the Disco, and She Wants Revenge were ask to provide cover songs of the original pieces by Danny Elfman.

“What’s This” is transformed into an Emo-punk speed song while Fiona Apple, with her morose voice, performs the equally morose “Sally’s Song”. Marilyn Manson and Panic! At the Disco each redo “This is Halloween” and She Wants Revenge takes on “Kidnap the Sandy Claws”.

With this release, The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is a 2-disc special edition. The first CD will contain the original soundtrack and the second CD has the new cover versions done by the above bands.

For All Kinds of Fans

If you own the movie, this soundtrack must be in your collection. Even though you can’t purchase the movie (without hunting it down online), the soundtrack is still available in stores. The 2-disc special edition is easy to find, any major retailer should have it, so if you are a Tim Burton fan or a Danny Elfman fan, you would be empty without The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.

Danny Elfman creates unique music to go along with unique movies.
