Natasha Bedingfield
From LoveToKnow Music
Natasha Bedingfield has ridden her chart friendly blend of pop, R&B and dance music to international stardom in a relatively short amount of time. From her roots in Christian music, she has become one of the biggest selling artist of the 2000s.
Natasha Bedingfield: Early Years
Born Natasha Anne Bedingfield on November 26, 1981, Bedingfield spent her childhood growing up first in Surrey, England and later in the Lewisham borough of London. She showed an early talent for music, and her parents enrolled her in both guitar and piano lessons. By the time she was a teenager, she decided to recruit her fellow musically inclined siblings Daniel and Nikola into a group called The DNA Algorithm. The DNA Algorithm was an electronic dance group with a Christian slant. The group wrote all of their own material and performed on the Christian festival circuit in the UK.
Bedingfield left The DNA Algorithm to go to the University of Greenwich to study psychology. She could not shake the musical bug and spent time at college working on demo recordings with fellow students. One year into her degree program, she decided to leave school so she could focus on music full time. After leaving school, she worked mainly as a songwriter for the Hillsong London Church. She continued in that capacity for several years, all the while seeking a major record deal.
Natasha Bedingfield: Record Deal
Bedingfield’s big break came in 2003 when she signed a deal with major label BMG UK and Ireland. Her debut album, Unwritten, was released the following year. The album featured guest appearances by several big name pop acts, including Nick Lachey, Kara DioGuardi and Andrew Frampton. The album went straight to number one on the UK music charts. The U.S. was a little slower to embrace Bedingfield, until the release of the album’s third single – the title track. That song became the most played song on U.S. radio in 2006. The album also won her four Brit awards and a Grammy nomination.
Bedingfield’s second album received a split release. The album was released in 2007 in Europe under the title N.B. and in 2008 in the U.S. as Pocketful of Sunshine. Like the first release, this album featured several guest apperances, including Adam Levine, Eve and Wayne Wilkins. In both territories, the album was less successful critically and commercially, but several high profile tour and TV appearances helped keep Bedingfield in the spotlight.
Bedingfield spent 2009 working on a new album, scheduled for a 2010 release.
