About My Morning Jacket
Hailing from the “math rock” capital of the world, Louisville, Kentucky, My Morning Jacket has a much different sound than many of the bands born of that scene. They formed in 1998, and soon after scored a record deal with indie label Darla. The following year saw their first release, The Tennessee Fire, come out on Darla to good reviews and increasing interest from fans.
The follow up release, At Dawn, came out in 2001, at which point the band experience a personnel shuffle, adding a new keyboard player Danny Cash and swapping drummers for Patrick Hallahan. Original members Two Tone Tommy, Johnny Quaid, and Jim James remained in the band.
The release of At Dawn drummed up enough press attention to get the major labels sniffing around, and eventually, My Morning Jacket moved from Darla to ATO. Their major label debut came in 2003 with It Still Moves.
After the release of the well received major label debut, Quaid and Cash decided to leave the band, and they were soon replaced with Bo Koster and Carl Broemel. At this point, My Morning Jacket released two retrospective music collections chronically their early years – Early Recordings Chapter One: The Sandman Cometh and Early Recordings Chapter Two: Learning.
The critical buzz, as well as the fan interest, around My Morning Jacket had been building slowing over the years, and in 2005, they released the album that really put them on the map in the mainstream – Z. This album was lauded by critics and put the band in the position for some very prominent recognition, including:
- appearing in the movie Elizabethtown (under the name Ruckus)
- appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman with some members of the Boston Pops – and then later that month performing with the whole Boston Pops ensemble.
- appearing on Saturday Night Live
In 2008, Evil Urges was released to good reviews from the press and long term fans of the band.
An important part of the My Morning Jacket’s career is their live shows. They are regulars on the touring circuit and put in appearances at most of the major music festivals. They have a reputation for coming close to “jam band” territory. In 2008, their set at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee lasted almost four hours long and featured a number of other musicians, including members of Metallica.
Oh, and the name of the band? Jim Jones found a jacket with initials MMJ monogrammed on it in the ashes of his favorite bar when it burned down. And a band was born.
