About Muse

Matthew Bellamy, Dominic Howard, and Chris Wolstenhome formed Muse in 1994 in their hometown of Devon, UK. The band’s early years were devoted to building up a fan base through frequent shows in London and Manchester. Eventually, they attracted the attention of the British music media, especially influential DJ Steve Lamacq and important weekly music magazine the NME. The press exposure helped the band land a deal with new production company Taste Media, who helped them release their first few EPs. An American label, Maverick Records, were first to sign the group, and deals in the UK, Europe, and Australia followed.

Despite the initial interest in the band from an American label, a dispute with Maverick over vocal style (Maverick asked for vocals to be re-recorded to make them more radio friendly, and the band refused) lead what was meant to be Muse’s first American release, The Origins of Symmetry, being cancelled. Though Muse has subsequently released albums stateside, this blow cost the band a great deal of American exposure. The band has a US following, but they have never achieved the level of success in America that they have achieved elsewhere.

Muse has continued to build its fan base through touring, and in December, 2006, they sold out the 75,000 seat Wembley Stadium venue in London in less than an hour. That rare combination of mass popularity and critical acclaimed have come together for Muse, who in addition to consistently selling out shows in the UK, France, and Japan, have been nominated for some of music’s top honors, like the Mercury Music Prize. Musicians as varied as Justin Timberlake and The Killers frequently cite Muse as one of their favorite bands.
