short description

Mamma Mia Soundtrack

Mamma Mia is a musical later turned movie that features over twenty songs by the Swedish pop group ABBA. The songs were handpicked by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, the male members of ABBA. Ulvaeus and Anderson also helped develop the musical for the stage. A fictional story was developed to tie the songs together in a coherent form.

The soundtrack is totally comprised of songs from ABBA’s catalog. The pop group was internationally popular during their run from 1972 to 1982. After the disbanding of the group, Ulvaeus and Anderson began producing music independently. It was their work on the musical Chess that caught the attention of creative producer Judy Cramer who encouraged the duo to incorporate their existing ABBA songs into the musical theater format.

Original Cast Recording

The Original Cast Recording was sung by the cast that debuted the play in London’s West end. It includes the following songs:

  • Honey, Honey
  • Money, Money, Money
  • Thank You for the Music
  • Mamma Mia!
  • Chiquitita
  • Dancing Queen
  • Lay All Your Love on Me
  • Super Trouper
  • Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
  • The Name of the Game
  • Voulez-Vous
  • Under Attack
  • One of Us
  • SOS
  • Does Your Mother Know
  • Knowing Me, Knowing You
  • Our Last Summer
  • Slipping Through My Fingers
  • The Winner Takes It All
  • Take a Chance on Me
  • I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do

The soundtrack was originally released in 1999, when the play premiered in London. In 2004, a fifth anniversary edition was released. It included a new version of Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia. It also included a recording of the song Waterloo, which was left off of the originally released soundtrack.

Film Soundtrack

In 2008, the popular stage show was re-invented a s a feature length film starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie was released on June 30, 2008. The cast recorded brand new versions of the old ABBA favorites which were available on CD July 8, 2008. A deluxe version of the soundtrack with additional recordings was released November 25, 2008.

Unlike the Broadway cast recording, the film version doesn’t include all of the songs in the production. Chiquitita, Under Attack, One of Us, Knowing Me, Knowing You, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, Waterloo, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia (reprise) are missing from the film soundtrack, but appear in the stage show soundtrack.

Thank You For the Music and I Have a Dream appear as a hidden track on the CD and were available on the iTunes version of the soundtrack.

The Deluxe Edition had a DVD included with the audio CD. Although the CD did not have additional songs from the film, the DVD had plenty of extras. It included a Behind the Scenes special that highlighted the recording process of the film soundtrack. It also had a music video for the song Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.

The film soundtrack hit number one in the Billboard 200 during August of 2008. It became a platinum selling album in the U.S. on August 18, 2008. It eventually sold over 1,000,000 copies. Worldwide it achieved sales of over 4,000,000. During the first week of its release it was in the top 10 for the soundtrack category on iTunes. It hit number one for overall album sales on iTunes on July 20, 2008.
