About Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia is a simple idea that turned into a worldwide phenomenon. Although it is often said that the musical is based on the music of ABBA, in reality the story actually was adapted by British writer Catherine Johnson from a 1968 Gina Lollabrigida movie called Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell. Although not technically “based on” the music of ABBA, ABBA’s songs are the driving force behind the musical and absolutely instrumental in making Mamma Mia such a hit. Of course, it is an ABBA song that gives the musical its name.

Members of ABBA were also involved in the development of the show. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the original songwriters for ABBA, worked with Johnson in pulling the show together from the very beginning. ABBA member Anni Frid-Lyngstad helped fund the show. The only member of ABBA who did not get involved in Mamma Mia in any way was Agnetha Faltskog. It is unknown why Faltskog chose not to participate, but all four members of ABBA did come together at the premier of the film version of Mamma Mia in 2008 – it was the first time the four had been together in 22 years.

Mamma Mia tells the story of a young girl who has never known her father. She is about to be married, and having found her mother’s diary, she decides to use her wedding as an opportunity to invite the three men she believes could be her father to the wedding, which is to be held at her mother’s Greek hotel. Her mother does not know she has invited the men and is shocked to see them. It emerges that she does not know which one is actually the girl’s father, but the men and the daughter agree that they are happy not to know and to all share a father/daughter relationship. The reunion of her mother and these three men brings the mother face to face with her long lost love, and while the girl eventually decides not to marry, the mother and one of the potential fathers end up being the ones to make it up the aisle.

Stage productions of Mamma Mia have been seen all over the world, and the musical has racked up theater awards all over the globe. It is one of the longest running musicals in the history of Broadway, surpassing the runs of such famous musicals as The Sound of Music, Damn Yankees and The King and I.

The movie version of Mamma Mia received decidedly mixed reviews from the press but has been a hit with audiences, earning major box office numbers.
