Lyrics to Eminem songs have both entertained and enraged people. Eminem has never been one to shy away from controversy in his songs, which has made him a lightening rod for criticism. On the other hand, he is considered to be one of the most lyrically adept rappers in the industry today.
Lyrics to Eminem Songs – Controversy
Criticism of lyrics to Eminem songs comes from many corners. One of the biggest fights he has faced is over homophobic song lyrics. His 2001 release The Marshall Mathers LP was the center of a major controversy at the 2001 Grammys. He was nominated for Album of the Year, Best Rap Album. Best Rap Performance Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group (thanks to a collaboration). GLAAD – the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation - staged a large protest outside of the ceremony. They claimed that Eminem’s lyrics were highly offensive to the gay and lesbian community and called upon the Grammy Academy to refuse to award the album. Adding to the controversy over the lyrics was the fact that Elton John performed a duet with Eminem at the Grammys. Elton John said he did not believe that Eminem is homophobic.
GLAAD wasn’t protesting alone outside of the Grammys in 2001. They were joined by the NOW – the National Organization for Women – who were offended by the graphic depictions of violence against his wife and mother on The Marshall Mathers LP.
Neither group was particularly successful in getting the public to join in their outrage over Eminem’s lyrics on this album. At the time of its release, it landed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the fastest selling album of all time. It has been certified platinum nine times and is often cited by critics as being one of the best rap albums ever made.
Although The Marshall Mathers LP was at the center of the most organized protest of Eminem lyrics, all of his work has drawn criticism from some quarters for being violent, misogynistic and homophobic. His lyrics were read aloud in Congress during a debate over strengthening laws against lewd entertainment. In particular, his many songs that address his relationship with his ex-wife Kim, including songs featuring violent fantasies of killing her, have drawn a great deal of negative attention.
For Eminem’s fans, and even the artist himself, the controversy over his lyrics are much ado about nothing. Music critics often refer to him as being one of the most lyrical rappers ever in the genre. Eminem himself told the audience of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2001 that he welcomed the controversy, because it only helps him sell more records.
