Liz Phair – Sell-Out or Constantly Evolving?

When Liz Phair’s first record, Exile in Guyville, was released in 1993, she was an indie rock queen through and through. The album was released by indie label extraordinaire Matador, and Phair’s sexually explicit lyrics and connection with the Chicago independent music scene put her firmly in the indie rock camp. Exile in Guyville sold extremely well for an independent release, going gold, and it was also lauded by critics everywhere – in fact, it is still present on many “most influential” lists.

Phair’s second album, Whip-Smart, was released to substantial media coverage. It debuted at number 27 on the Billboard charts and spawned the single Supernova, the video for which was put into heavy rotation on MTV. whitechocolatespaceegg, her third Matador release, didn’t do quite as well as Whip-Smart, but still reached a respectable 35 on the charts, was critically acclaimed, and sold a significant number of records.

This success was a double edged sword in some ways for Phair. In the wake of whitechocolatespaceegg, she signed with major label Capitol Records, and things began to change. Recording for the new record didn’t start until 2003, a long break after 1998’s whitechocolatespaceegg. Capitol Records were unhappy with the initial recordings of the songs and wanted something with a bit more crossover potential. They sent Phair back to the studio to work with production team The Matrix, who tend to work with very un-Phairlike artists such as Ashley Tisdale and Avril Lavigne.

The resulting four tracks pleased Capitol, and they went ahead with the album. This self titled album might have pleased the top brass at Capitol, but it did not please many fans and critics. Phair was labeled a sellout and fans turned away from her in droves. Some new fans were found through the single Why Can’t I, which made it into the Top 40, but Phair never reclaimed her old status.

A second album for Capitol tried to turn back to her earlier sound, but Phair was unable to convince many of her old fans. The album received better reviews than the first Capitol album, but it was not a major success.

As for Phair's response to the sellout charges - she says get over it. She says that she has changed over the years and her new music reflects the new her.
