About Soundtracks

Soundtracks come in a few different forms:

  • Soundtracks to musicals – collections of songs, usually originally, from a musical film. (Think of Grease and The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
  • Soundtracks of non-original tracks that appeared in the movie - These soundtracks are often grounded in a particular genre of music or a particular musical time period.
  • Film scores

The first soundtrack released was from the movie Till The Clouds Roll By. The soundtrack was released on four vinyl LPs in 1946 by MGM. MGM also brought the use of the word “soundtrack” into common parlance when they advertised the album as “recorded directly from the soundtrack." MGM was inspired by the release of cast recordings from Broadway musicals.

Soundtracks did not really catch on until the 1950s, but since then, it has become standard for almost every movie to release a soundtrack – often a soundtrack of the popular music in the film and a separate score recording soundtrack. Some soundtracks have topped charts, gone platinum many times over and become beloved albums in their own right. Just a few such soundtracks are Dirty Dancing, The Big Chill, The Bodyguard, Saturday Night Fever and Purple Rain.

Listen to Soundtracks Online

There are many sites on which you can listen to soundtracks online. If you are interested in exploring soundtracks, give the following sites a try:

  • Live 365 – What better way to get to know soundtracks that to listen to soundtracks carefully mined for the best tracks by longtime soundtrack fans? Live 365 internet radio has several radio stations devoted exclusively to soundtracks that you can dip into and out of any time you need your soundtrack fix.
  • Rhapsody – You have two options for listening to soundtracks on Rhapsody. Like Live 365, the site hosts internet radio stations that focus on soundtracks. Also, you can stream any soundtrack in Rhapsody’s database any time. The catch is that you only get 25 free streams before you have to become a Rhapsody member. At the time of writing, Rhapsody memberships cost $12.99 per month for unlimited music streaming.
  • Soundtrack DB – Soundtrack DB includes an extensive collection of soundtracks you can stream for free, plus soundtrack trivia games and a message board to chat with other soundtrack enthusiasts. You’ll also find reviews for new soundtracks periodically posted to the site.
  • Streaming Soundtracks – The name kind of says it all here. On this website, you can listen to soundtrack streams at any time. There is a catch, however. You can dip in as a passive listener at any time, but you are at the mercy of the playlists created by the site owners and members. If you want to request songs and have some input into the soundtracks that get played, you have to join the site and become active in the community. Membership is free, though you can opt for a VIP membership for a monthly fee that allows you to make more frequent requests for the playlist.
  • AOL Radio – Like some of the other options here, AOL Radio offers several different online stations that play all soundtracks, all the time.
