Limewire Detailed Downloading Guide
From LoveToKnow Music
LimeWire is one of the top peer-to-peer file sharing sites on the Internet. Like its contemporary, Kazaa, the site is free to all users for uploading and downloading music and videos. The interface is very simple, so downloading should be a breeze for most users with high-speed modems.
Installation of LimeWire
Before you begin downloading files, you must first go to LimeWire’s Web site and download the program. This is simple enough and free. Downloading is fairly quick and from there, you will run the program’s Installation Wizard, which walks you through very carefully. After you are through choosing a file for the program on the Installation Wizard, you will push “Finish”, which creates a shortcut on your desktop.
Setting Up Your Personal Program
LimeWire offers many advanced features that can make the program’s experience more personal to you. After installing the program, the Setup Wizard will give you various options, such as whether or not you want the program to automatically start when you turn on the computer. Also, you can personalize the look of the program by changing “skins”. There are several skins available if you go to the View menu and choose “Apply Skins”. Should you want a larger variety of skins, they are available for download here.
Searching For Files
Once everything is downloaded, installed, and personalized to your liking, you can begin searching the thousands of free files LimeWire has to offer. The search feature, like the rest of the program, is extremely user-friendly. By pushing the Search tab, a dropdown menu will give you more options. For music, you will choose Audio and from there, you can narrow your search even more by choosing a genre. However, if you have no preference, you can select Any Type and the program will pull up all audio files. When a lime is shown to be spinning, the search is processing your request.
If you are a regular user, you may become a bit more familiar with what they have to offer for your interests. In that case, you may be interested in only what is new to the program. The What’s New tab shows all files that have been recently uploaded from fellow users.
Choosing a File to Download
Once the search is finished and your options appear on the right side of the screen, you will be provided with the following information about each file:
- Quality- 4 stars indicate the file is ranked the highest and is most trusted for download
- #- Indicates how many identical files there are of that selection
- File Type- ex: MP3
- Name of File
- Size of Download
- Speed of Download- Speeds highlighted in green are the best
- Bitrate- This only applies to audio files
Downloading From LimeWire
You have the option to select one or a group of files to transfer. Transferring a group is quicker than downloading each individually, but it is recommended that you not download anything that has been rated low. Those files are considered to be untrustworthy or slow. The former could bring you a virus. The file will be immediately available for you to view or hear once the transfer is finished. From there, you will have the option of highlighting and deleting the file from your search engine (some keep their results history empty as a means to avoid potential lawsuits) or saving the file in your LimeWire library.
