Leona Lewis is one of those rare success stories to come out of a reality TV show. She won season three of a British talent competition called The X Factor. Oddly enough, she almost missed her opportunity. Lewis began pursuing a career in entertainment at a very young age. She started attending London’s famed Sylvia Young Theatre School at age 5 and by age 12, she was writing songs and wowing crowds with her voice. She won a number of talent competitions for both her songwriting and her singing, but by the time she reached college age, she had failed to secure a record deal (although she did come close when she was 15 and she recorded a demo called Twilight).
Without a record deal in place, after working a few small jobs, Lewis decided to put her music aspirations aside and head to university. She nearly didn’t apply for The X Factor, but her boyfriend convinced her to go for it. She was an instant favorite on the show and for the most part, breezed through the competition with ease.
The structure of The X Factor is such that each contestant is paired with a mentor/judge. The mentor helps them develop their performances each week, and then each contestant is judged on that performance by the other mentor/judges. Lewis had a stroke of luck when she was paired with Simon Cowell as her mentor. The famously acerbic Cowell was an early believer in Lewis and has remained supportive throughout her career.
After she won The X Factor, Lewis scored big with a cover version of a song from another talent show winner – Kelly Clarkson’s A Moment Like This. She sold over a million copies of that single. Upon its release, it broke the then world music downloading record, selling over 55,000 units in 30 minutes. She won UK single of the year, and at one point, a chain record store said they were selling 100 of her CDs every single minute.
In the wake of that success, Lewis won a $5 million dollar contract with J Records. In late 2007, her debut full length album Spirit was released in the UK, and in 2008, the album was released in the United States. The second single Bleeding Love, established Lewis as a bona fide international superstar, and propelled by the popularity of the song, sales of Spirit soared. Lewis wrote some of the songs herself on the album, and she also worked with other writers including R City.
A follow up to Spirit is due in 2009.
