A Brief Kings of Leon History

Many great bands in rock and roll history have been driven by brothers. The Black Crowes have Chris and Rich Robinson, Oasis has Noel and Liam Gallagher, Van Halen has Eddie and Alex Van Halen, The Kinks have Ray and Dave Davies, and so on. Kings of Leon takes the brother approach to the next level in that three of the members are brothers and one is a cousin. The Followill brothers are Caleb on vocals and guitar, Nathan on drums and vocals, and Jared on bass guitar and vocals with cousin Matthew on guitar and vocals. Their all-in-the-family line up makes them a sort of a rock and roll Jackson 5!

The Followill family history is one of the most interesting stories in rock and roll. Leon Followill, a travelling Pentecostal preacher, raised the three brothers. The family travelled throughout the Deep South following their father who preached at various revivals and churches. In 1997, Leon left the church and divorced their mother, and the brothers moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Kings of Leon was born.

Since 2003, Kings of Leon has released one EP and four full-length albums to critical and commercial acclaim. Even though they are a very American band with a very American sound, their success in the United Kingdom has greatly surpassed their domestic success. The band has had nine top 40 singles in the UK, including a number one, and has one two BRIT Awards. Not to say they have been completely ignored Stateside, as they have won a Grammy Award for the song Sex on Fire.

Popular Kings of Leon Songs

There are plenty of great Kings of Leon Songs to choose from, but this brief list gives a sampling of some of their best-received work to date.

  • Sex on Fire – Sex on Fire, the debut single from the band's 2008 album Only by the Night is their biggest hit to date. The song went to number one in Australia, Finland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom and is currently the most digitally downloaded single ever. In the United States, the track wasn't as huge a hit as it was overseas, but it did reach number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest a Kings of Leon song has ever charted, and did reach number 1 on the Alternative Songs chart. The song received mixed reviews from the press, but Rolling Stone listed it as number 40 in their list of the 100 best songs of 2008.
  • On Call – The first single from the 2007 album Because of the Times, the song On Call was a major hit for Kings of Leon, reaching number 18 on the U.K. charts. The song begins with an atmospheric a cappella verse before kicking in to a mid-tempo pop rhythm reminiscent of some of U2's bigger hits.
  • The Bucket – The Bucket was the first single from the 2004 album Aha Shake Heartbreak and helped launch the record to strong initial sales. The single went to number 16 in the U.K. and reached number 23 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. Reflecting the rawer, more garage inspired feel of the band's earlier sound, The Bucket featured tight harmonies, a driving beat, and plenty of fuzzy guitars.
  • Red Morning Light – From their first full-length album Youth and Young Manhood, the song Red Morning Light was the album's first single. Hard, fast, and loud, Red Morning Light is as straight ahead 60s rock as Kings of Leon get. A fan favorite, this track embodies the band's early, less polished approach to songwriting.
