About Kenny Chesney

Country start Kenny Chesney got his start in the music business in the early 1990s. After completing a degree in advertising at East Tennessee University, he struck out for Nashville like so many other aspiring country stars, and he began to play the local circuit. Also like a lot of country stars, his first recognition was a songwriter rather than a performer, and the first deal he scored was a publishing deal with Opryland Music Group (administered by BMI) rather than a record deal.

The publishing deal came in 1992, but a record deal with indie label Capricorn came soon after. The album did reasonably well for a country release on an indie label, selling around 10,000 copies, but Chesney found himself without a record deal soon after as Capricorn decided to get out of the country music business.

Fortunately for Chesney, a major label had noticed his success with Capricorn, and soon he had a deal with Sony BMG subsidiary BNA Records. Throughout the mid 1990s, Chensey’s records sold reasonably well, but it wasn’t until 1997 that Chesney soared to the top of the country charts with his song She’s Got It All from the album I will Stand.

From that point on, Chesney became a staple in the country music scene. His live tours are especially popular, usually selling out every venue he plays.

The Renee Zellweger Incident

For non-country fans, Chesney may be best known for being the ex-husband of actress Renee Zellweger. Chesney had a crush on Zellweger since seeing the movie Jerry McGuire – he even wrote a song about her based on a famous line from the film: You Had Me At Hello. The two met while filming a benefit show for victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami and kicked off a whirlwind romance, marrying a few months later in the Caribbean. Just a few months after getting married, Zellweger filed for an annulment of the marriage, citing fraud. There was much speculation about the meaning of that word, but Zellweger claimed it was simply the legal term and wasn’t intended as an indictment of Chesney’s character.
