About Keith Urban
Keith Urban’s sound may be all Nashville, but his country roots are really in Australia. New Zealand born and Australian raised, Urban caught the music bug early in life, professing his desire to be a country singer by age 7. He started learning the technical ropes of music at that young age, and by age 12, he was heading a band that was a big hit on the local circuit. By the time he was 15, Urban decided to leave school behind and throw himself into making it in the music industry. After several years playing small gigs and playing in backup bands for bigger artists, Urban signed a deal with EMI Australia in 1990.
His first album for EMI, released only in Australia, earned him a whopping four chart topping hits there, and so with that success under his belt, the country music capital of Nashville beckoned.
In Nashville, it was back to square one for Urban. He found himself playing backup and session musician again, playing live and in studio with big name artists such as Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, Charlie Daniels and The Dixie Chicks. In the late 1990s in Nashville, Urban formed his own band, The Ranch, and released one album with them, which was hailed by critics but largely ignored by music buyers.
Urban left The Ranch and set out to get his solo career off the ground again. In 1999, he released a self titled album, his debut to American audiences, and scored three country chart top five hits. The album also earned him the Top Male Vocalist award at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2001.
It was Urban’s follow-up album, Golden Roads, which really catapulted him to stardom. The single from that album, "Somebody Like You," held the number one position in the charts of eight weeks. Two coinciding tours, supporting Brooks and Dunn and Kenny Chesney, increased Urban’s rise to fame. It wasn’t long until Urban was selling out stadiums on his own, not to mention breaking records.
Country Music History and Tabloid Attention
It is a relative rarity for country music to have major crossover success on the Billboard Top 40 charts, but in 2006, Urban made country music history when his single "Once in a Lifetime" debuted at number 17 on the mainstream Billboard charts. This debut was the highest ever for a country song.
Urban’s other crossover success may be less valued by him - the attention he receives in the tabloid press. Thanks to his 2006 marriage to fellow Aussie and Hollywood megastar Nicole Kidman and his subsequent trip to rehab, Urban constantly finds himself in the glare of the public eye.
