About Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks has taken the world by storm, and she hasn’t even hit her twenties yet. Since winning American Idol in 2007, Sparks has been in high demand, touring and releasing successful singles. Unlike some of her fellow American Idol alums, Sparks seems to have made the transition to respected artist easily and has earned the respect of her peers who broke into the charts sans TV show. Rather than being a flash in the pan whose albums are bargain bin destined, Sparks has shown signs that she might be able to make her career last for the long haul.
Sparks has been trying to make it in music virtually all her life. Before her stint on American Idol, she was in music events at her school and church. In fact, eventually, Sparks left high school to be home schooled so she had more time to pursue her music career. She won second place in a Star Search style competition in her home state of Arizona in 2006, shortly before her American Idol audition.
It was relatively smooth sailing for Sparks during her time on American Idol. Her performances kept her safe from elimination most weeks, and she stood out as an early favorite to win. After winning the show, Sparks scored a record deal with the Zomba Music Group – one of the biggest label umbrellas in the industry. She was the only Idol contestant they ever picked up for a deal.
In addition to her music, Sparks is known for her modeling. Before she started American Idol, she had won several plus size modeling competitions. She won acclaim during her time on the TV show for being comfortable with her physique and not trying to conform to industry standards. Since winning, she has done occasional modeling campaigns and advertisements.
Sparks is also known for her religious beliefs. She is a vocal evangelical Christian and prior to winning Idol frequently performed Christian songs. She did find herself in the center of a minor debate when she displayed an anti-abortion sign on her MySpace page.
In Spring of 2008, Sparks was forced to drop out of her opening slot role on what was to be her first major non American Idol related tour, supporting Alicia Keys, because of damage to her vocal chords.
