 Believe it or not, music career all started with Back to the Future. He had previously attempted music, in the form of playing the clarinet at school, but felt no real affinity for it. It was watching Marty McFly rock out, however, that inspired Mayer to give music another try, this time with a guitar. Unsure that their son was actually going to stick with the instrument, his parents were a little resistant to investing in a guitar. Eventually, they relented and reached a compromise, renting a guitar for Mayer to practice on. Mayer’s love affair kicked into high gear when he discovered the music of Stevie Ray Vaughn around the time he got his guitar. Vaughn’s music inspired Mayer to focus on learning blues guitar specifically, and by the time he was 16 years old, he was playing in blues clubs in his Bridgeport, Connecticut hometown. When Mayer graduated high school, he gave college a miss for awhile in favor of a job at a gas station so he could save up money to finally buy his own guitar. Saving took him 15 months, but he did eventually get that guitar. After buying the instrument, he was accepted into the lauded program at Berklee College of Music, but he dropped out after two semesters to concentrate on music full time. After leaving Berklee College of Music, Mayer headed to Atlanta with college Berklee friend Clay Cook and started a band with Cook called LoFi Masters. The group became a hit on the local Atlanta circuit, but after a few years, Cook and Mayer parted ways after a difference of opinion about the direction of the music (Mayer wanted to go more ). At this point, Mayer began working on his solo career, recording the EP Inside Wants Out. Mayer’s big break came at the annual South by Southwest Music Festival in 2000. At the Austin, Texas music convention, Mayer performed a showcase concert and attracted the attention of Aware Records. Thanks to a deal between Aware and major label Columbia Records which gave Columbia first refusal on Aware artists, Mayer soon signed a deal with the major label. Success came very quickly after the deal with Columbia, with the release of Room for Squares (which technically was a reissue album – it had previously been released as a download only album). The radio hit Your Body is a Wonderland was spawned by this release, and in 2003, Mayer won his first Grammy. Since then, it has been all uphill for Mayer, who has become one of the top selling artists of the 2000s. He has also increasingly found himself the target of the tabloid press, thanks to high profile relationships with people like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. Mayer also has become known for his sense of humor and has dabbled in stand-up comedy, including one VH1 special. In 2008, Mayer hosted a cruise for his fans called The Mayercraft, and a repeat of the cruise is expected in 2009.
