About Jesus Christ Superstar
The musical Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the many successful collaborations between Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice. The main plot of the music focuses on the relationship between Judas and Jesus Christ. In the play, Jesus and Judas are collaborating on a political movement, and Judas is concerned about certain changes in Jesus. He believes that Jesus is falsely characterizing himself as a king and as divine, and that this behavior by Jesus will take a toll on the whole movement. He is also concerned about the nature of Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. Judas betrays Jesus to stop Jesus’ followers from growing any larger in number and stop what he believes will be violence caused by the followers of Jesus’ splinter group. Jesus is crucified - although notably the play does not depict the Resurrection - and Judas, consumed with guilt and angry at God, commits suicide.
Jesus Christ Superstar debuted in the 1970s, when political activism was at an all time high, and the play sought to link the relationship between Jesus and Judas to those of modern political activists. The music in the show drew heavily from modern rock music of the day, especially psychedelic music. The stage show was an instant hit, with tunes from the shows regularly making appearances in the music charts. The play was followed by a movie in 1973, which brought the story to a larger audience and helped cement its place in pop culture.
Of course, given the religious nature of the film, the show is not without its controversy. The fact that the Resurrection is not included in the story has outraged religious groups. The sympathetic portrayal of Judas, the portrayal of Jesus as an imperfect man and the suggestive nature of Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene have all also troubled some religious groups. Despite the controversy however, Jesus Christ Superstar remains one of the most successful musicals in the history of theater and the title track in particular is one of the most recognized show tunes ever.
