January 2007 Daily Free Song Downloads
- Know Your Onion! by The Shins. The Shins are one of those bands that everyone can agree on - moms, dads, and children; indie kids to American Eagle Outfitter shoppers. They're indie cred is strong - they are on SubPop Records, after all - but their too darned catchy hooks are downright irresistible to all who encounter them. Do your bit for peace in the new year and download this track by The Shins. In fact, while you're there, download the other two free tracks you'll find as well.
- Ootischenia by The Be Good Tanyas. The Be Good Tanya bring fetching pop harmonies to traditional country themes in a way that is utterly new and exciting, yet as old as the hills at the same time. This song is from their third album, Hello Love, and if you like this free track, there are three others where this one came from.
- Zombie by The Trucks. If you like Peaches' electronic dirty talk, then The Trucks can do you one better. Their music is filled with all the synth pop fun of a Peaches track, but they bring a little more feeling to the party by putting a little life into the vocals. An all girl electro indie pop group? You just don't pass up chances like these.

- You Never Got Me Right by Frida Hyvonen. There's such a thing bad nutty and totally endearing nutty, and Ms. Hyvonen falls squarely in the second camp. This Swedish indie queen is starting to make waves in the US for her vaguely Regina Spektor like vocals, her charming lyrics, and her lovely little piano based ditties. Click and see what the fuss is all about.
- Save Room by John Legend. Just when you were wondering if anyone would ever carry the torch for artists like Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, John Legend came along. This track is from his follow up to wildly successful 2004 debut album Get Lifted. Now, it's true this song has been picked up by just about every advertising campaign on TV now, and it's true that Oprah is his biggest fan, but don't hold that against the man. If this track doesn't make you a believer, follow the link and you'll get to check out two more Legend songs.
- Ticket to Immortality by The Dears. Canadian indie pop kids The Dears often get compared to The Smiths (fair enough) and Broken Social Scene (not so sure about that one). This is literate pop music, kind of twee, but with a little edge, not unlike something Cherry Red Records might have released. The Dears are winning the fans over, one at a time, with their constant touring. This link not only gets you this song, but also the chance to check out 14 other songs from their album. Not bad for one click.
- You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse, featuring Ghostface Killer. Remember when women R&B/soul singers actually had to be good singers? Amy Winehouse does. This girl is the real deal, with the pipes to deliver jazzy, soulful songs that are right on the money every time. To make things more exciting, she adds Ghostface Killer into the mix. Wow.
- Shortie Like Mine by Bow Wow. You might remember Bow Wow from the days he went by Lil Bow Wow. He's all grown up now (well, at least he's in his late teens), and the child play is over. The flow that made him a child star is still there, but the lyrics and the beats are an all together more mature affair.
- Jezebel by Belinda Carlisle. Remeber Belinda Carlisle? She of 80s all girl rock band extraordinaire the Go-Gos? Her lips have been sealed for a long time, but now she's back, with with an album of covers of French pop classics by the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, Edith Piaf, and Jacques Brel. This kind of music is perfect for Ms. Carlisle - it allows her to play up the smokey, breathy side of her voice to great effect. This link not only allows you to download this song, it will take you away to a place where you can stream the entire album of French pop mastery. Just click, and viola!
- Goodbye by The Postmarks. The Postmark combine clever lyrics and breathy female vocals with sweeping orchestral pop music, horns and all. Fans of Belle and Sebastian, Isobell Campbell, Camera Obscura, and The Hermit Crabs will hear something they like here. If you like your pop music to make you swoon, this one is for you.
- Wonderwall by Oasis. Oasis is as famous for the constant brawling between band member brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher as they are for their music. That's a shame, because they are perhaps the only band to ever take really take the sound of The Beatles and make it their own, by making it sound at once both fresh and classic. This song was perhaps their biggest hit, and the one first brought them to American audiences.
- This Lonely Night by Wayne Hancock. Wayne "The Train" Hancock keeps the flame alive for country music like they used to make it. This is part outlaw country, part honky tonk, and part western swing country, and The Train pulls every one of them off. Follow this link, and you'll get to hear every one of those sounds as well, as you listen to this song, plus 13 more free ones.
- Go Hard or Go Home by E40, featuring The Federation. The movie Stomp the Yard is blowing up the box office, and now, the soundtrack looks set to blow up the charts. The album features some of hip hops best and brightest beat makers, like Ghostface Killah, The Roots, Cut Chemist, and of course, E40, whose track we have here. Think this soundtrack sounds too good to be true? Can't wait to get your hands on it? We were hoping you'd say that. Click the link above, and while you're getting this E40 tune, go ahead and get yourself 13 other tracks from the album, all on us. Yes, really.
- Again and Again by The Bird and The Bee. The Bird and The Bee make indie pop born out of jazz standards, or rather, they show just how much Europop actually has in common with jazz (surprisingly). This is Europop from West Coast, USA, however, and so expect to hear a little bit of sunshine creeping into these tunes. Fans of Ivy, here is the heir to the throne
- It's Nothing To Me by Lee Hazelwood. A free track by Lee Hazelwood? Well, now, this is a treat. So much more than some guy who once worked with Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazelwood is one of the last great troubadours of rock music and should be thought of in the company of dark, broody, lyrical greats like Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash. This track is from the album Death or Cake, which Hazelwood has said would be his last. We can but hope his view on retirement is similar to that of the perpetually retiring Rolling Stones.
