Every High School Musical soundtrack is as enormously successful as the movies themselves.
The Original High School Musical Soundtrack
Given that this Disney franchise is currently on its third version, the first "Disney Original Movie" that aired on the small screen can be referred to as "HSM One". In this version, the public is introduced to the main characters of the three films:
- Troy – Zac Efron
- Gabriella – Vanessa Hudgens
- Sharpay – Ashley Tisdale
- Ryan – Lucas Grabeel
- Chad – Corbin Bleu
- Taylor – Monique Coleman
- Kelsi – Oleysa Rulin
Zac Efron Singing
All the young actors in the film were credited with singing their own songs on the soundtrack, though Zac Efron had a little help with his vocal stylings from singer, actor and songwriter Drew Seeley.
The reason why Efron got help from Drew Seeley on the soundtrack wasn't due to the fact that he can't sing. According to Disney, Efron was cast late during the pre-production phase and his voice was in different range than the songs already recorded because Drew Seeley, who has written and performed many songs for various Disney channel shows and films did them. The producers decided to keep Drew on for the rest of the songs so that the voices on the soundtrack were consistent.

Start of Something New – Performed by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. Robbie Nevil and Matthew Gerrard wrote the lyrics to this song
Get'cha Head in the Game - Performed by Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Drew Seeley. Seeley also contributed to the lyrics of this song, along with Ray and Greg Cham.
What I've Been Looking For – Performed by Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale in HSM but a reprise was done for the soundtrack, performed by Vanessa Hudgens and Drew Seeley.
Stick to the Status Quo – This song was performed by the entire HSM cast, including Drew Seeley and was written by David Lawrence and Faye Greenberg.
When There was Me and You – Performed by Vanessa Hudgens and Drew Seeley. This song was written by Jamie Houston.
Bop to the Top – This number was done by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel and written by Randy Peterson and Kevin Quinn.
Breaking Free – Songwriter Jamie Houston also penned the lyrics for this song and it is performed by Vanessa Hudgens and Drew Seeley.
I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You – This song was performed by Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley tisdale, Lucas Grabeel and Drew Seeley. The song is composed by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil.
Going Platinum
Not only was HSM hugely successful as far as television ratings, but the soundtrack was equally successful. Here are a few facts that attest to its success:
- It was the number one selling album of 2006.
- The soundtrack is certified as four times "Platinum" according to Billboard Magazine.
- It is also certified "Platinum" in the United Kingdom, Argentina and Venezuela.
- The song Breaking Free peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
- The songs have been redone in 10 other languages aside from English:
- Spanish
- French
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Hindi
- Hebrew
- Mandarin
- Polish
- Japanese
The End of a Franchise?
The last installment of High School Musical, High School Musical: Senior Year, is said to be it's final one. Zac Efron has gone on to star in various films and there were rumblings that he refused to do anymore HSM after the third and final film. Vanessa Hudgens has also parlayed her HSM success into other film roles as well as a music career.
The successes outside of HSM of the two main stars may be an issue as to why rumors are circulating that the third film is the final film, but almost all of the original actors are now in their twenties and are interested in doing other projects. Plus, you can't stay in high school forever.
