High School Musical 3: Senior Year walks viewers through that all important senior year of their favorite high school students. The characters are all facing tough decisions about their future and are wishing their time together in high school could last a little longer. The two main storylines in the movie surround the planning of a final school musical together and competition for a scholarship to Julliard between the characters. Several other smaller storylines develop throughout the movie to wrap up what is happening with each character individually. Some of the highlights include:

Troy and Gabriella are trying to decide what to do about their relationship in the future. Gabriella gets early acceptance to Stanford and decides to take it. Troy convinces her to return to the school for prom and graduation, however.

Sharpay hires a new British foreign exchange student as her personal assistant, but the exchange student ends up turning on her. Sharpay sets the record straight by showing up her assistant at the final show.

Troy is dealing with pressure from his parents about his academic future and his inability to decide what he is going to do with his life.

At the wrap of the movie, the future plans of all of the characters are revealed. Gabriella will return to Stanford and Troy will attend the nearby University of California at Berkley, where he will play on the college basketball team. The scholarship to Julliard is won by both Ryan and Kelsi. Sharpay plans to attend the University of Albuquerque and work at the high school drama department. Taylor plans to go to Yale.
