The Motion Picture

Originally released in 1978 and set in the late 1950s, the motion picture Grease starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and was an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name. The film tells the story of a high school romance between the good girl Sandy (Newton-John) and the greaser gang leader Danny (Travolta), and captures the feel good nostalgia of that period in American history (the name "Grease" is actually an homage to the "greaser" subculture that the film celebrates.) The spirit of more simple and innocent times live on through the movie's soundtrack, a classic mixture of '50s do wop, tearful love songs, and old time rock-n-roll.

The Soundtrack

The throwback spirit of the Grease soundtrack struck a nerve with late 1970s music fans in a big way. The sound and attitude of the music stood in stark contrast to the musical styles that dominated the charts at that time (think Linda Ronstadt, The Ramones, and Boston). Originally released as a double album, the Grease soundtrack featured 24 songs performed by a cast of popular and legendary artists such as Sha Na Na, Frankie Avalon, and Frankie Valli. Some of the most memorable performances, however, came from the film's stars, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.

The Hits

The film soundtrack spent nearly six months as the number one album on the Billboard Hot 100 in the late summer and fall of 1978. The biggest hits from the soundtrack were the Travolta/Newton John duet You're the One That I Want, Summer Nights performed by Travolta, and the Frankie Valli's title track performance of Grease.

The Australia Connection

The soundtrack for Grease features several connections to the land down under. Most famously is Olivia Newton-John herself, who's character Sandy in the film is also Australian. In addition, Australian songwriter John Farrar wrote and produced two of the album's biggest hits including Hopelessly Devoted to You, and You're the One That I Want. Farrar went on to continue to work with his fellow Aussie Newton-John throughout her career and wrote and produced music for her hit albums Physical and Xanadu. Finally, Barry Gibb of the legendary band The Bee Gees wrote and produced the soundtrack's title song Grease.

Awards

Not only was Grease a commercial success, but both the movie and the soundtrack were honored by the critical community. Olivia Newton-John's ballad "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Academy Award for best original song in 1978. The film Grease won five Golden Globe awards that same year. Grease was the biggest box office hit of 1978.
