From LoveToKnow Music

Because it can do so much more than just play video games, it might be a good idea to look into getting some free PSP music downloads. Sony has been marketing its handheld device as a portable multimedia machine, offering top-notch video games, mobile video, wireless Internet surfing, and, yes, even an integrated MP3 player that just might be enough to replace your Apple iPod.

Free PSP Music Downloads

Although it may sound like a fairly complicated process, finding free PSP music downloads to enjoy on your Sony handheld is not nearly as difficult as some may lead you to believe. In fact, most free music download websites are compatible with the PSP, and even if they're not, it could be a simple matter of converting the files into a format that will work with the PSP.

There are many ways that you can find free music online. Some people enjoy P2P-based networks like Limewire, whereas others prefer to get their MP3 files from more official sources like iTunes. Whatever the case, whether you want to pay for your tunes or download free MP3 music, there is a whole world of options available to you. Listening to music on your PSP is no exception and should not act as any sort of barrier to entry.

Upload Music to Your PSP

People who own an Apple iPod likely make use of a program called iTunes, not only to purchase their songs, but also to synchronize their music libraries with their portable music players. If you are coming from this perspective, uploading music onto your PSP will be a slightly different experience than what you're accustomed to. However, if you own a different MP3 player, particularly one that is USB Mass Storage compliant, getting songs onto your PSP will be a walk in the park.

In a nutshell, you'll have to set up a specific file folder structure on a Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick Pro Duo. All of your music files will be placed inside a single folder, and then the Memory Stick will be inserted into your Sony PSP. The actual reading and writing of files onto the memory card can be done either through the PSP (using a USB connection) or through a standard card reader. The result is the same.

Compatible Music Formats

Depending on the firmware version of your PSP, it may or may not be compatible with certain music file formats. As you know, MP3 music is by far the most popular format used on the Internet. However, if you're accustomed to an iPod and purchase songs on iTunes, the format that is used by Apple is actually AAC or Advanced Audio Coding. What's more, these songs can typically only be played on the original computer where the file was downloaded and a single iPod. There are ways around this, but that's another discussion altogether.

If you have the most recent PSP firmware version, you'll likely be able to enjoy a wide range of file formats including WMA, ATRAC3Plus, MP3, and WAV. Most PSP handhelds will work with a standard MP3 file, so it's probably your best bet to stick with that.
