Free Music Downloads for iMesh

From LoveToKnow Music

Free music downloads for iMesh are becoming a thing of the past, thanks to the deal iMesh cut with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Once a top P2P music downloading site, iMesh now offers copyrighted music to customers on a subscription basis, with the free music and videos all being in the form of non copyright controlled material. Free music downloads for iMesh are therefore still a possibility, but people are using the service less and less to get the free stuff.

iMesh – What WAS It?

With the “i” prefix (iPhones, iTunes, iMacs, and so on) becoming the digital version of the “mc” prefix (McMansions, McNuggests, and such), the name “iMesh” can be a little confusing. iMesh is not in any way connected to the Apple iYouNameIt hegemony – and in fact, iMesh started using the “i” before the “i” was cool. iMesh premiered on the internet in 1999 as a P2P (peer to peer) file sharing network for music fans. The program connected users online who wanted to trade songs. Initially, iMesh used a centralized database to operate, but in later versions they moved to the more commonly used “computer to computer” transfers. iMesh was also the brains behind so called “swarming” in P2P networks. Swarming allows users to download a file from many different sources so that the download speed is increased. With added antivirus software, which was not always integrated into other programs at the time, iMesh quickly became one of the most popular music downloading sites on the net.

Of course, once you become a popular P2P downloading service, you put yourself directly in the crosshairs of the RIAA, and soon iMesh found itself on the end of one of those nasty trade infringement lawsuits. The RIAA came a-knockin’ in 2003, and by the end of 2004, the website and the labels had reached a deal. The RIAA received a payment of over $4 million from iMesh, as well as an agreement from iMesh to work with them to create a pay music downloading service.

iMesh – What IS it?

After the settlement with the RIAA, iMesh obviously had to change the way they did business. Enter iMesh 6 in 2005. With the thumbs up from the major record labels, iMesh began to offer copyright controlled music that users could stream in exchange for a monthly fee. There was no limit to the number of the songs users could listen to, but if they wanted to actually own a song, they had to pay to download it. This method changed iMesh’s customer base but they ultimately maintained some degree of popularity as an online source for music. This formula of “music renting” has become one of the leading ways online companies are offering copyright controlled music these days, and the major labels are hoping this way of doing things catches on for good, because it brings paying customers back to the table.

The latest version of iMesh – iMesh 7 – follows the same format but also has instant messaging capabilities and a social networking feature.

Free Music Downloads for iMesh

iMesh does still offer free music, just not the kind most old school iMesh customers are used to getting from them. All of the free music that is available on iMesh is of the non copyright controlled variety. That means that much of the music that is available is from bands that have not been signed and have added their music to the site themselves. There also is occasionally free music available on iMesh from major labels; labels sometimes use this site to promote new releases and add free music (and music videos) to the site.

How to Get iMesh

If you want to give iMesh a try you can download it from the iMesh website. Make sure you download the version that is compatible with your operating system.
