Foo Fighters: The Beginning

The Foo Fighters didn't just magically form out of the ashes of what was left of Nirvana after Kurt Cobain's death in 1994. Instead, the musicians that formed the final incarnation of this critically acclaimed band had to fight to be heard and to emerge out of the huge shadow cast by Nirvana.

Throughout the late 1980's and during his run with Nirvana, drummer Dave Grohl would record tracks on his own during his down time with friend and music producer Barrett Jones. Following the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, Grohl opted to keep to himself for a few months, until Jones urged him to get back into the studio.

The two spent a week in recording tracks from Grohl's old song catalog, with Grohl doing the vocals and playing all of the instruments (except the guitar on one song) on the final 15 tracks they would end up recording. Grohl recorded a demo of the completed songs and handed them out for friends and other musicians to check out.

Needless to say, everyone loved it and major record labels began vying to get Grohl to sign with their respective labels. In the end, Capitol Records won and those 15 tracks that Grohl and Barrett recorded would end up being the Foo Fighters debut album. The Foo Fighters would eventually leave Capitol Records for RCA when their friend and Capitol Records president was forced to resign.

The Indelible Mark on Music

Dave Grohl has successfully stepped out from behind the drum set of one of the most well known bands in the world and become wildly successful without having to be introduced as "Dave Grohl, former drummer for Nirvana." The Foo Fighters have developed a new fan base while keeping the legions of loyal fans that did follow Grohl based on the fact that he was once a part of Nirvana.

The band is not only loved by fans, but critics as well. The Foo Fighters have won six Grammy's, include their most recent "Best Rock Album" Grammy for Echoes, Patience, Silence and Grace. On top of their Grammy wins, they have been nominated 13 times, their first nomination belonging to their first self-titled album Foo Fighters.

Being nominated for a Grammy for their first album has caused many a musician to fall into the "sophomore slump", this is not the case for the Foos. The band has been together for over a decade and continues to surprise critics and fans with their music. Every album they release is so undeniably Foo Fighters, yet so different than the album before. This ability to sound the same, yet different, is why the now 30-something's that grew up with Nirvana in their teens and watched Dave Grohl form the Foo Fighters in their early 20's and an 11 year old that hasn't even been on this planet longer than this band, can listen to any given Foo Fighters CD and both love it equally.
