February
- Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey by Harry Connick, Jr. Harry Connick, Jr. became something of a spokesperson for his hometown of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and he continues his quest to make sure the city gets back to its glory with a new tribute album, Oh My Nola, a collection of jazz standards and original tracks. This song is from that album, and if you follow this link, you'll get to sample two more album tracks.
- Interstate 5 by The Wedding Present. Is The Wedding Present the most underrated band in the indie rock universe? Quite possibly. All they've ever done is bring you catchy guitar hooks, wry and witty lyrics, and some supremo drumming, and still they somehow get overlooked time and time again. Give credit where credit is do and give this track, from their first album in 8 years, a shot. You might just discover your new favorite band.
- Sweetie Pie by Morrissey. Moz (as he is called) is bang on form with with his new EP I Just Want to See the Boy Happy, a collection of live performances of old Smith hits and new Morrissey tunes, plus a few new studio tracks thrown in for good measure. This track is from that EP, and if you follow this link, you'll get to try out six other songs. Not to be missed.
- Hung Up by Madonna. Madonna is up for two Grammy awards at this week's ceremony, both in the dance category. This track is the hit song from the album that earned her the attention of the award commission; download it and see what you think. Grammy worthy? Or will the statue go to her competition, Shakira or Nelly Furtado? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
- Don't Cha by The Puassycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes. Love it or hate it, you definitely can't escape this song (especially if the recent American Idol Auditions are anything to go by). What can we say; it's darned catchy. This is another Granny nominated track, so leave us a comment and tell us if you think this song deserves a statue on Sunday.
- Not Ready to Make Nice by The Dixie Chicks. The Dixie Chicks cleaned house last night at the Grammy Awards, taking home a remarkable five litte statues. That sound you hear in the background is probably the sound of some people moaning about politics and such, but download this track and see what the Chicks music is all about. With this link, you can check out two other Dixie Chicks songs from their Grammy award winning album.
- Alice by Tom Waits. In preparation for Valentine's Day, a song from a man who knows about heartache.
- Cinnamon Girl by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. About now, all you eagled eyed readers out there will be saying, "by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs? Don't you mean Neil Young?" Well, you're partially right. This IS a Neil Young song, but this version comes from the Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs covers album. These two pop hook masters have recorded an album of all the songs that inspire them, and since it's Valentine's Day and you deserve a little something special, this link will give you a chance to check out the entire album. Covers of Velvet Underground songs, Beach Boys songs, and the best song by the Zombies ever await, so get to clicking.
- Shame for You by Lily Allen. Can you say sensation? No one knew her name this time last year, but late last year, Lily Allen exploded onto the UK music scene, armed with that rare combination of critical praise AND chart topping hits. She's making a splash stateside now, and when you hear her, you'll know why. Follow this link to download this track, and you'll also get to hear the rest of her new album for free. Not a bad deal, I'd say.
- A Giant by Design by A.G. Andre the Giant, also known as A.G. may be one of the most underrated MCs in hip hop. Well known in his native South Bronx for unmistakable flow, he has had a hand in some of hip hops biggest hits, but yet never quite made a slash for himself. That all changes now, with the release of his new album, Get Dirty Radio. Follow this link to download A Giant by Design, and word is that you might just end up scoring one extra free track as well. But you didn't hear it from me.
- Dead on Arrival by Fall Out Boy. Some call Fall Out Boy an emo band. Some want to pull their hair out when they hear Fall Out Boy called an emo band. Who's right? That's not for us to say; all we know is that Fall Out Boy, or more specifically, Pete Wentz, cannot be escaped these days. Take some time out from reading about which young starlet Mr. Wentz is entertaining at the moment and give their actual music a try. One click on the link above gets you a free song.
- What Goes Around...Comes Around by Justin Timberlake. Could this single be behind the breakup of JT and Cameron Diaz? Rumor has it that Scarlett Johansson's appearance in this video put Ms. Diaz right over the edge. Is Scarlett's character supposed to be Britney? Oooh, the scandal. But that's not our business - here, we talk about the music. And what can we say about the music? Well, if only all pop artists made music like Justin. He's so good you don't even have to be ashamed to like him anymore, so go ahead, give in, and click the link.
- What You Know by T.I. Rapper T.I., who was christened the "Jay-Z of the South" by Pharrell, but who himself prefers the more to the point, self granted "King of the South" moniker, is perhaps most well known for being that guy who managed to shoot a video while in jail (yes, really). However, it won't be that way for long. Hip Hop fans know T.I. has something that makes him stand out from the crowd of the down south flow wannabes, MTV loves him, and thanks to his collaboration with Justin Timberlake, T.I. looks set for crossover success. If you want to know more about T.I. after checking out his track, read our T.I. profile here.
- In Shock by Kristin Hersh. Will the real Kristin Hersh please stand up? Throwing Muses...50 Foot Wave...all very great, and yet all very different. Once you check out this track from the new album Learn to Sing Like a Star, however, you'll figure out that Kristin Hersh can be pretty much whoever she wants to be - and when she decides, you can bet she's going to outshine everyone else in the field.
- Before I Forget by Slipknot. Mask wearing metal band Slipknot is one of those bands who's fans become more like cult members than casual listeners. Members of the Korn/Coal Chamber/Staind school of metal, Slipknot has gone from underground obsession to popular metal music powerhouse in a few short years. Check out the link above to see if to see if Slipknot will make a believer out of you, and for mask wearing musical mayhem, check out our Hollywood Undead article
