The Band
From the ashes of Nirvana, drummer Dave Grohl created the Foo Fighters in 1995. However, the band has become more than just a drummer's side project. The Foo Fighters have released six studio albums and earned two Grammy awards for Best Rock Album, gaining legions of fans in the process. Some of the band's most well-known singles include "All My Life", "Learn to Fly", and, of course, "Everlong".
The Song
"Everlong" appears on the 1997 album The Colour and the Shape. A love song with a rock beat, it was the album's second single. Its unique music video, directed by Michel Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame, drew additional listeners the music. In a unique claim to fame, the band played "Everlong" on the first episode of The Late Show with David Letterman aired after Letterman's 2000 heart surgery. He introduced it as his favorite song.
Acoustic Version
The "Everlong" acoustic MP3 first gained notice when Dave Grohl performed the song during an appearance on the The Howard Stern Show in 1997. The stripped-down guitar and Grohl's solo vocals highlight the romantic lyrics of the song, giving it a completely different feel. Bootleg recordings of the radio program were passed around among fans until an official acoustic version was finally released as part of the 2006 live concert CD Skin and Bones.
