Depeche Mode got their start in 1980 in Basildon, Essex, UK, as a four piece band. Front man Dave Gahan was joined by Martin Gore (keyboard, guitar, and the brain behind most of Depeche Mode’s song lyrics), Andrew Fletcher (keyboards and bass) and Vince Clarke (keyboards). Yes, it was a lot of keyboard players for Depeche Mode. This was the time that punk music was giving way to New Wave, New Romantic and first wave Goth music, and synths were the order of the day. Depeche Mode was perfectly poised from the beginning to ride this musical wave.

Clarke, who actually penned the band’s first songs, left the group in 1981 and was replaced by Alan Wilder, who played – you guessed it – keys. Wilder quit the band in 1995, and Gahan, Gore and Fletcher have continued the band as a trio ever since. The rest of the sound, including drums, is flushed out with session musicians.

Depeche Mode makes music that straddled genres, and devotees of a variety of different music styles claim them as their own. First wave goth music fans often lump Depeche Mode in with bands like The Birthday Party, and early Depeche Mode, while certainly synth heavy, is also very dark. Early electronica and sample heavy dance groups like the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure point to Depeche Mode as inspiration, and fans of this less dark, more upbeat strain of 80s music also claim Depeche Mode as one of their faves. They are also alternatively linked in with British Invasion Two bands (the MTV video bands of the 1980s) and New Wave bands.

In terms of influence, you can hear the Depeche Mode sound in many post punk bands as well as modern acts like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers.

Depeche Mode has sold over 73 million records worldwide and have made the charts in the UK, U.S. and Australia. They continue to sell out stadiums in Europe in particular and are in high demand on the summer festival circuit. Although Gahan’s much chronicled struggle with drug abuse has threatened to derail the band many times, Depeche Mode has managed to become one of the longest lasting acts in music.
