December 2006 Daily Free Song Downloads

  • Chestnutz by Bootsy Collins. We know you may not be in the mood for Christmas tunes just yet, but it certainly seems worth making an exception for a Bootsy Collins Christmas album. Follow this link, and not only can you get your funk on with this tune, but you can check out the entire album, which oddly features both Snoop Dogg and Charlie Daniels. Fun for everyone.
  • Bossy by Kelis. You fell in love with her Milkshake, so you'll probably overlook the fact she's a little Bossy. If you somehow missed this track from Kelis' 2006 album Kelis was Here, then it is definitely time to fix that. She makes pop music cool again. One cautionary note to our younger readers, though - this song is explicit.
  • Goodbye by Eddie Vedder. Mr. Pearl Jam himself leaves grunge behind for this acoustic, night-time by the bonfire on the beach surf ditty from the soundtrack to A Broke Down Melody. Who knew he had it in him?
  • Sewn by The Feeling. Orchestral Britpop for fans of Super Furry Animals, Travis, Radiohead, and more. If you don't know these guys already, expect to hear a lot more from them in the future.
  • Thunder on the Mountain by Bob Dylan. Does Bob Dylan really need an introduction? Just let it be said that this is his first album in five years, and he he's still got it. This link will take you to this song, plus two others. Generous, we know, but tis the season and all that.
  • Shine On by Jet. With everything 80s being cool again, it is perfectly OK to be into this power ballad from Jet. Fans who loved Jet for their infectious hit Are You Gonna Be My Girl might be a little surprised here, but really, give Jet a chance to show you their sensitive side. You won't be disappointed. Whether or not the coolness of this power ballad makes your old Poison records cool again, well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
  • Houston by Dieselboy. Dark drum and bass from one of electronica's most prolific DJs. If you're not sure just what that means, follow the link, where you'll hear this track, plus 13 more from Dieselboy from his double disc The Human Resource. If you're no electronica novice, then you should know that this one is for fans of Dara, Andy C, and Black Sun Empire.
  • The Thrill is Gone by Kenny Wayne Shepherd featuring B.B. King. Kenny Wayne Shepherd has a developed a reputation of being the last great hope for traditional blues music, and recently, he hit the road to re-discover his inspirations and blues roots. Followed by a film crew, he toured the South, hooking up and playing with legendary blues artists along the way. This track comes from one of those sessions. If you want to see this amazing project in action, look for the new DVD 10 Days Out: Blues from the Back Roads.
  • Walk the Line by Johnny Cash. This live recording is from The Man in Black's landmark Johnny Cash at San Quentin album, and simply is a can't miss for fans of any kinds of music. If this track only tickles your Johnny Cash appetite and you need more, visit our Free Johnny Cash Music Downloads article.
  • A Winter Romance by Dean Martin. Ok, we give, it's time to roll out the holiday tunes. We start with this lesser known track by the king of the swingers, Mr. Dean Martin. This song is more chilled martinis than chesnuts roasting over the open fire, but that's not a bad thing. Follow this link, and you'll find 16 more Dean Martin tracks to help you have yourself a kitschy little holiday, daddy-o.
  • Santa Claus is Freaking Me Out by Lord Weatherby. A comedic Christmas tune for those who need something to improve their mood after a painful trip to the mall. Lord Weatherby, I suspect you're not alone. By the way, you can check out more free Christmas downloads by visiting our Download Free Christmas Music article.
  • 364 Days to Go by Brad Paisley. The bad news is, I'm sorry to report that there are NOT 364 shopping days left before Christmas. The good news is, you can follow this link to download this track from country superstar Brad Paisley's Christmas album and while you're there, you can stream the entire album. Not bad, huh? Now, if only you could wrap this gift...
  • Jingle Bells by Duke Ellington (Ball of Waxx Remix). While this version of Jingle Bells doesn't include the ever popular "Batman smells, Robin laid an egg" alternate lyrics, it does include just enough remixing by the Ball of Waxx gang to make it sound fresh and new, while still letting the master, Mr. Ellington, shine through. Old traditions made new again; can you ask for anything more during the holiday season?
  • River by Sarah McLachlan. This cover of an old Joni Mitchell song is from Sarah McLachlan's new Christmas album Wintersong. Follow this link, and you'll get to check out the entire album.
  • Run Rudolph Run by Billy Idol. "But Christmas is over," you say. But the holidays aren't really over until New Years, we say, and plus, don't you think a holiday album by Billy Idol deserves an outing? Download this track for all of your post punk, post Christmas listening needs.
  • Walking My Gargoyle by The Gothic Archies. Ok, ok, we give, enough with the holiday music. Downloads get back to normal with a bang, with this track from the least well known incarnation of Stephin Merritt, The Gothic Archies. This particular little slice of thinking man's goth pop comes from the soundtrack The Gothic Archies recorded to accompany the Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events books. But even if that doesn't mean a hill of beans to you, don't ever pass up a chance to download a Stephin Merritt track.
  • Somerville by The Pernice Brothers. The Pernice Brothers are back with their follow-up to last year's Discover a Lovelier You, and this time, they're ready to rock. Well, ok, rock in a power pop, twee kind of way, but this album rocks harder than the last one nonetheless. Gone are the sweeping, orchestral landscapes, but firmly in place are some pretty darn fine horns. Follow this link to grab yourself this free song, plus you'll be able to check out the rest of the album while you're there.
